Description:

This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf culture and United States Deaf
communities. Students will learn fundamental language skills and cultural knowledge needed to
comprehend, produce, and interact effectively with diverse sign language users. This course will
include an introduction to Deaf culture and history to increase sensitivity in cross-cultural interactions.

At the end of the course, ASL 1 students will be able to:

1. Apply accurate production, grammar and structural rules in sentences.
2. Demonstrate comprehension and production skills in order to participate in conversations and
produce narratives.

4. Examine, compare and contrast diverse Deaf Culture and history with their own cultures.

Communicative Language Teaching:
The focus will be learner-centric in which learners will develop communicative competency through sharing
their biographies and interests with each other. The teacher and learners will use the target language so that
students will experience authentic language while sharing and interacting with each other. Deaf culture,
history, norms and tendencies will be introduced through in-class demonstration and activities.

Interactive Learning:
Students will engage in interactive learning opportunities through partner and group activities and to apply
their target language skills to real-world situations. They will discuss topics such as, where they are from, where
they currently reside, and leisure activities that they enjoy.

Whole Language:
Students will have opportunities to experience authentic, target language use by engaging in dialogue as
opposed to memorizing lists of detached words and grammatical structures. There will be in-class activities
geared toward allowing students to exchange their backgrounds and interests so that they can develop their
comprehension and production skills in the target language.

Slide #1 (5 minutes)

Roll Call: The instructor will direct students to sign in using PhotoBooth App on
iPad by fingerspelling their first name. The students will be seated in semi circle
classroom to maintain a clear sightline.

The instructor will wave both her/his hands in the air quickly to get everyones
attention and ask students if they have any questions from Assignment 2.2
(previous class assignment.)
