Glenn H. Parkin
I chose to do this assignment on Glenn Parkin for the fact that he is a
great and patriotic American. The class theme I chose to follow is the
experience of war. Glenn served in World War II, in the Pacific theater. He
survived two battle ships sinking in World War II, one was the USS
Northhampton and the second was the USS Hoel. The USS Northhampton
was sunk in the battle of Guadalcanal and the USS Hoel was sunk in the
second battle of the Philippines. The specific battle was Leyte Gulf, this was
the largest naval battle of World War II and some scholars argue the largest
naval battle in history.
The experience of war for Glenn was nothing short of hell on earth and
absolutely horrific. At the battle of Leyte Gulf his ship the USS Hoel was sunk
by the largest battle ship in World War II the pride of the Japanese navy the
Yamato. Glenn was 1 of 82 survivors of a crew of 337. He and his ship
mates were lost at sea for 3 days. Several of his comrades were eaten by
sharks while floating in the Pacific Ocean.

War is one of the worst things that can happen to a young man, forever
forging horrific images into their psyche. War should absolutely be avoided
at all costs, World War II saw some of the worst atrocities against humanity.
The reading of Bare Foot Gen was a very interesting outlook on the other
side of the war and what the poor population of Japan most of gone through,
truly horrendous. In war nobody wins and everybody is on the losing side.
