The 10 Most Dangerous Phrases In A Relationship

You're on your best behavior when
you first start dating someone: polite to a fault,
quick to suggest sharing dessert (later, you
enter "order your own!" territory), and really,
truly careful about what you say.

Then, somewhere down the line, you
get comfortable. A little more loose-lipped. You
say things you don't mean.

An apology generally goes a long
way, but some things said in the heat of the
moment may be irreversibly damaging to your
relationship. Below, 10 phrases you should
banish from your argument arsenal.

1. Anything that begins with you
always or you never.
There's no hope of having a productive
conversation once you or your S.O. makes
sweeping accusations against each other, said
Virginia Gilbert, licensed marriage and family
therapist.

"Uttering
these
words
will

immediately put the other person on the

defensive. Instead of getting what you want, the
two of you will spend the rest of the evening
-- or the rest of your relationship -- debating
whos right. Instead, use 'I' statements. For
instance, 'I feel that Im usually the one to say 'I
love you' and it would make me feel good if you
could say it first sometimes.' Keeping the focus
on your needs instead of pointing out your
partners shortcomings -- as glaring as they may
be -- invites an opportunity for positive change."

2. "Why do you want to do that? You
never used to like to [fill in the blank]."
Healthy, long-lasting relationships involve two
people who are able to grow together. You're
different people than the ones you were when
you first met, so don't freak out or assume
there's some ulterior motive if your partner
changes his or her habits.

You each need room to grow," said

relationship author and divorce attorney

Christina Pesoli. "Just as you wouldnt be
threatened by him updating his wardrobe or
growing a beard, you shouldnt be threatened
when he updates his hobbies, either. Developing a
new interest isnt a threat to your relationship,
but your refusal to allow him or her to do so is.
If youre with someone who never tries anything
new, your relationship will eventually grow
stale. So as long as hes not talking about
learning to cook meth or joining ISIS, try
embracing his new hobbies."

3. "You're overreacting!"
Related, equally annoying-as-hell phrases
include: "You're being too sensitive." "Don't
get so defensive!" "Calm down." Let one of
these sentences slip and you'll more than likely
find yourself in the proverbial dog house, said
William J. Doherty, Ph.D., professor of family
social science at the University of Minnesota.

"Saying this is a favorite of men trying
to get women to stop being upset," he said. "It's
never worked in human history, but why not
keep trying? The problem is that when in the
midst of being upset, no one thinks their feelings
are unjustified, and thus they feel unheard and
put down. It would make anyone madder."

4. Mmmhmm. Mmmhmm. Wait -- what
did you say?

Think you've mastered the art of
scrolling through Instagram while pretending
to listen to your S.O. talk? Think again.

"Eventually, your partner will
conclude that youre not all that interested
in what he has to say -- and its hard to argue
with that," Pesoli said. "Talking to someone who
doesnt really care about what youre saying

can be hard on the ol self esteem -- especially

when that someone is your significant other.
Being too busy to listen every once in a while is
understandable. Being too busy to listen all the
time is a relationship killer."

5. "I told you so."

What, you thought we'd get through
this list without including this classic example?

"Say 'I told you so' one too many times
and pretty soon, resentment sets in," dating
expert Marina Sbrochi said. "No one likes to be
thought of as dumb. Try empathy instead and see
how your relationship grows."

6. Not tonight (or tomorrow night,
or any night), honey."
You and your partner aren't always going to be
on the same page when it comes to sex. You each
should absolutely feel free to say, "Not really
in the mood after that brick-sized carnitas
burrito." But you don't want "not tonight, not
ever" to become the norm.

"Defaulting to 'not tonight' is a bad
habit to form," said Pesoli. "Physical intimacy
is what makes your relationship with your
significant other different than any of your
other relationships; otherwise, the two of you
are just roommates who may or may not have kids
together. If the fire goes out in the bedroom,
theres no question that your relationship will
be in peril. Making a little effort to have sex
with your S.O. is almost always a good idea."

7. "What's wrong with you?"
Below-the-belt personal attacks have no place
in a healthy, loving relationship. Your goal
should be to prop your partner up and be his or
her cheerleader in hard times, not to bring them
down.

"If you find yourself saying something
like 'Are you that stupid?' 'What kind of a parent
does that?' or 'You're just like your mother,' you
need to cease and desist," said marriage therapist
Becky Whetstone.

8. "I don't believe you."
There are bound to be times when you suspect
your partner is bending the truth a bit -- or a
lot. It's how you relay your skepticism that will
move you closer to discovering the whole story.

"Maybe you really do suspect he or
she has feelings for someone else, for instance,
but there's a better way to go about it than
accusing your partner of lying," said Doherty.
"Saying 'I don't believe you' is inflammatory and

Genzebe Dibaba to win IAAFs

Athlete of the Year award

Ethiopias Genzebe Dibaba and USAs
Ashton Eaton were named the male and female
IAAF World Athletes of the Year for 2015 on
Thursday (26).

Both athletes set world records during
2015, Eaton in the decathlon and Dibaba in the
1500m, and won gold medals in these events at
the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015.

Ashton Eaton became the first
decathlete to win the male World Athlete of the
Year award after his spectacular performance in
the Chinese capital, his only decathlon of the
year, when he set a world record of 9045 and
improved his own three-year-old mark by nine
points. Notable among his individual events
in Beijing was a 45.00 400m at the end of the
first day, the fastest one lap of the track ever run
within a decathlon.

Athletes spend the most vigorous
years of human life, arguably called the best
years, working to hone their abilities. So, when
an athlete competes, what people are witnessing
is the manifestation of what a human being is
capable of when they choose to direct all of their
time and effort towards something.

Im grateful and thankful to the IAAF
for excellent competitions, the canvases that
allow us to display our work.
While Im honoured that I am considered the
artist of the year, I did not beat Usain and
Christian; my work simply differed in design.
They are some of the most talented and beautiful
performers of all time. Im flattered to be among
them.

I accept this award on behalf of all of
us athletes who love what we do.

Genzebe Dibaba, after setting a world
indoor 5000m record of 14:18.86, was then
unbeaten in her five 1500m races during the
summer. Firstly, she ran an African record of
3:54.11 in Barcelona, the fastest time in the world
for almost 12 years, and then topped that with
a stunning world record of 3:50.07 in Monaco
to beat a mark that had been on the books since
1993. In Beijing, Dibaba was majestic through
all three rounds of the 1500m, winning every
race comfortably, and she also took a 5000m
bronze medal.

I am humbled and honoured to
receive this award from the IAAF, said Dibaba.
It feels so good to be the World Athlete of the
Year.

After being a finalist and narrowly
missing out on this award one year ago, I am

very proud to be recognised by the fans and

experts of our sport.

I had a great season and truly enjoyed
competing around the world, from Monaco
where I managed to establish a world record, to
Beijing where I finally captured my first world
outdoor title.

I would like to pay tribute to Dafne
Schippers and Anita Wlodarczyk who have been
incredible all year round. Maybe your time will
come next year!

Thank you to all the people who
voted for me and supported me. My family, my
sisters, my coaches, my partners, my agents and
all the people from Ethiopia!

My focus in 2016 will be the IAAF
World Indoor Championships in Portland and as
preparation for that I will try to break the world
indoor mile record in Stockholm on 17 February.

This is a difficult time for our sport
and with the Athletes Commission we stand
together with Sebastian Coe as he deals with the
challenges.

IAAF President Sebastian Coe
commented: While the athletics family is not
gathering together as usual in Monaco, we rightly
celebrate the marvellous 2015 achievements of
the athletes. Foremost, I offer congratulations to
our World Athletes of the Year, world champions
Ashton Eaton and Genzebe Dibaba. Your
performances in 2015 are an inspiration and
examples of true sporting excellence.

A world record when winning a world
title is a rare feat and capped two unequalled days
of decathlon brilliance from Ashton in Beijing.
Genzebe, your win in Beijing was as assured and
your 1500m world record a few weeks earlier a
run of true grit and determination. We salute you
both as we do all our award winners who have
been announced today.

Finally I wish to thank all the
athletes, coaches, officials who work tirelessly
for our wonderful sport. Our appreciation also
goes to the media for relaying the excitement
of competition and to the fans watching in
stadiums, in homes and on the move around the
world. Your enthusiastic support made the IAAF
World Championships in Beijing the most talked
about sports event of the year.
How the award was decided

Last month the IAAF Family* was
asked to vote for athletes from each of the
following categories: sprints, hurdles, middle
and long distance, road running, race walking,
jumps, throws, combined events and multiterrain.
The top-voted athletes in each category formed
the longlist for the World Athlete of the Year,
from which an international panel of 10
experts** selected the three finalists. The panel
cast their own vote to determine the IAAF World
Athletes of the Year.

Note to world leaders: This is how to

welcome refugees

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau greets refugees fleeing Syria, during their arrival
at Pearson International airport, Toronto [AP]
Antonia Zerbisias
@AntoniaZ
Al Jazeera

They were hardly the poor,
huddled masses Canadians might have
expected.

In fact, the 163 privately
sponsored Syrian refugees from Lebanon
who landed in Toronto late last Thursday
looked less bedraggled and besieged than
other Canadians do after a long overseas
flight.

But then, most Canadians don't
travel in government jets, don't get the red
carpet treatment, don't bypass line-ups for
baggage and border clearance - and don't
get greeted by their recently elected Prime
Minister Justin Trudeau.

These refugees did not arrive like
the tens of thousands of Vietnamese "boat
people" did in the 1970s, or any other group
of terror-fleeing refugees at other times in
Canadian history.
Canada announces details of refugee
resettlement plan

"This is a wonderful night where
we get to show not just a planeload of
new Canadians what Canada's all about,
but we get to show the world how to open
our hearts and welcome in people who are
fleeing extraordinarily difficult situations,"
Trudeau said.

"Tonight, they step off the plane
as refugees. But they walk out of this
terminal as permanent residents of Canada,
with social insurance numbers, with health
cards, and with an opportunity to become
full Canadians."

Personal welcome
Two days later, another planeload of
161 privately sponsored Syrian refugees
landing in Montreal barely made national
news, let alone international headlines.
That was despite a personal welcome by
Philippe Couillard, the Quebec premier,

John McCallum, the federal immigration

minister, and Denis Coderre, Montreal's
mayor.

Would the newcomers' landing at
Toronto's Pearson International - which was
named after another Liberal prime minister
- have made world news had Trudeau not
been there with his trademark baby-kisses,
warm hugs and selfies?

Would the newcomers' landing at
Toronto's Pearson International - which was
named for another Liberal prime minister
- have made world news had Trudeau not
been there...

Trudeau, the telegenic son of
Pierre Trudeau, arguably Canada's most
popular prime minister of the 20th century,
was made for the internet age. Young,
handsome and to the official manor-born,
he is backed by a top-flight team of political
strategists who know how to maximise
media - new, old, and social - to sway
public opinion and perceptions.

This would explain why the
trending hashtag #WelcomeRefugees,
coined by the government itself, now
appears on its immigration and citizenship
ministry website. (Not surprisingly,
that site has been radically overhauled
since the refugee-hostile Stephen Harper
Conservatives' nine-year reign ended.)

And so heart-warming images of
Trudeau zipping the new arrivals into bulky
winter coats hit TV, tablet and telephone
screens everywhere. They were splashed
on the pages of the world's newspapers,
from the Times of India to Britain's
Independent. They were tweeted and they
were facebooked. They became the perfect
Christmas story.

In the US, The New York Times,
Washington Post and Los Angeles Times
published reports and editorials accusing
the US of not measuring up to its northern

neighbour's compassion.

They pointed out how more than
half of the states' governors want to keep
their borders closed and how the leading
Republican presidential candidate Donald
Trump has promised, should he win the
White House, to "shut down" Muslim
immigration and register all US-based
Muslims.

Anti-refugee rhetoric in the US
Indeed, the anti-refugee rhetoric in the US
has reached such a hysterical level that more
than one-third of all Americans approve
of Trump's proposed ban. One armed
vigilante-type group known as the "Three
Percenters" even vows to "interfere" with
Muslims "threatening to take over" the US.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau greets
refugees fleeing from Syria, as they arrive
in Toronto [AP]

"Canada's generosity - and Mr
Trudeau's personal warmth and leadership
- can serve as a beacon for others," a New
York Times editorial headlined Canada's
Warm Embrace of Refugees maintained.
"[I]t puts to shame the callous and
irresponsible behaviour of the American
governors and presidential candidates who
have argued that the United States, for the
sake of its security, must shut its doors to all
Syrian refugees."

Others were not so genteel.

"US politics right now feels like a
clown show of ventriloquised garbage bags
yelling dangerous nonsense about Muslims
and the Second Amendment," the men's
magazine GQ taunted. "But just north of
the border ... Trudeau is showing just how
far leadership traits like compassion and
open-mindedness can go toward endearing
yourself to your countrymen. Who would
have thought?"

ALSO READ: Canada as the
world knew it

Right now, Trudeau's approval
ratings stand at 57 percent, higher than
when his Liberal party swept to power
on October 19. Nearly three-quarters of
all Canadians believe he has the makings
of a good leader. He clearly has an effect.
Canadian business has delivered millions in
sponsorships, housing, furnishings and even
mobile phones. Church and community
groups, as well as individuals, have pledged
to sponsor and support one newcomer. One
chief executive is personally committed to
bringing in 50 families at a cost of more
than $1m. Coming around

Judging by the reception for the
first wave of refugees, largely ArmenianSyrian families with relatives in the
country, Canadians who had concerns about
security, especially following last month's

terrorist attacks in Paris, will be reassured.

They're already coming around.

In mid-November, polls showed
that opposition to Trudeau's refugee
resettlement plan - 25,000 are expect to
arrive by the end of February 2016 - was
as high as 60 percent. Last week, two days
before the first planeload, Canadians were
split, with those saying they welcome
refugees slightly outnumbering those who
would not.

True, other polls show that
Canadians are worried that the influx will
strain the already hard-pressed healthcare
system as well as other social services.
This nation of immigrants and refugees
also feels that Syrian refugees are getting
preferential treatment over other groups.

But their faith and pride in their
country has been restored. As Trudeau
himself has repeatedly proclaimed,
"Canada is back."

Canadians, new and old, have
left the dark Harper decade behind and are
once again charting a familiar course, one
where the world's weary and war-sick are
welcomed.

almost always backfires. A better version is this:
'I'm having trouble believing you are telling me

9. "I want a divorce."
When you threaten to breakup or divorce,
you're pulling out the big guns . You may have
deep regrets about saying it later, but the
damage is done. As idle as the threat may be, the
message to your partner is loud and clear: you
already have one foot out the door. And who
wants to be in a relationship like that? "Simply
put, it's emotional blackmail," said Whetstone.
"If what you say has a tone of 'if you don't do
this, you'll pay or I'll leave,' it's eventually
going to take a toll on your partner."

10. If you really loved me, you'd..."
Nope. Stop right there. Your partner shouldn't
ever feel pressured to do something he or she
doesn't want to do to prove his or her love for
you. "Theres nothing like guilt combined with
a stealthy ultimatum to drain the love right out
of a relationship," said Gilbert. "Instead of trying
to manipulate your partner, be transparent
about what you want: 'I miss spending time with
you and Id like to have a regular date night' is a
direct, non-confrontational approach thats far
more likely to get you the love you want than
holding your partner hostage emotionally."

We need to focus on the real
culprits: culture, custom and tradition.
We need to create a new culture, and
new traditions. We need to erase old
practices that lower the value of girls
and create new customs that elevate the
status of women.

Rajvinder (Raj) Khaira is the
founder of The Equality is Sweet
(Pink Ladoo) campaign. This is a
global effort to inspire the South Asian
society to accept boys and girls equally
and without discrimination. Raj reflects
with me about her own upbringing
andwhy the campaign is important in
helping create, in her own words, new
traditions and customs that empower
women instead of marginalizing them.
Tell us about the Pink Ladoo
Campaign?

There are many complex
causes to the problems faced by
South Asian women globally. It is
possible that these complexities
have overwhelmed the South Asian
community and acted as a barrier to
engagement with potential solutions
to the problems it is possible people
have been left feeling like they dont
know where to start.

The Pink Ladoo campaign
is trying to lower the barriers to
engagement by stripping some of the
complexity out of these causes and
focussing on a discreet issue, namely
that there are several South Asian
traditions to celebrate boys births but
none to celebrate births of girls. This
practice reflects the prevalence of
male-preference culture within the
South Asian community.

The campaign is encouraging
the global South Asian community
to create a tradition of distributing
Pink Ladoo (an Indian sweet
traditionally distributed to members of
the community to mark the birth of a
boy or other celebration) to celebrate
girls births. By encouraging people
to redefine South Asian gender-biased
social norms and customs that lower
the status of women, it is hoped that

The aim of the campaign is to help

young girls find confidence. Tell me
about your own experience growing
up and how you overcame some of the
challenges?

I am the oldest of 3 children
and there is a considerable age gap
between me and my siblings my
sister are 10 and 12 years younger than
me respectively. My parents never
treated my sister and I differently for
being girls. It was a different story
within the community and extended
family however, and people reacted
very badly when my sister was born by
virtue of the fact that she was a girl. It
was then that I came to realize the type
of bias that South Asian women face
within the community.

I grew up in a gender-biased
community where men and women
fulfilled traditional South-Asian
gender roles. Men and women who
broke that mould were mocked or
criticised. Double standards were rife.

I met Harbir Singh when I
was 14, who is now my mentor and
the National Director for Canada for
the Pink Ladoo Campaign. She was
instrumental in helping me overcome
the challenges that came with being an
ambitious girl growing up in a sexist
community. From a young age she
instilled a sense of self belief in me
that has been key to everything I have
gone on to achieve. She boldly and
confidently defied gender-biased social
and cultural norms and quickly became
and continues to be one of my role
models. My relationship with her is
part of the reason why I believe that
positive role models are so essential
for young girls; role models act as

Why do you think the South Asian

Since we launched this

us we dont know why people dont
want girls and we are baffled by this
question, because to us, its very clear
why people are disappointed when
they have girls.
Why would you want a daughter, if
it means you have to pay a massive

wedding for her, when she gets older?
Why would you want a daughter if,

These

together over the generations to create

erase old practices that lower the value
of girls and create new customs that

This is what the Pink Ladoo

to change the way they react to the
birth of a girl. We want girls to be
welcomed into this world with joy and
enthusiasm instead of indifference or
remorse. To do this, we need to start
talking about gender inequality, and
the Pink Ladoo campaign is here to get

Canadians Are Leading The

Conversation About Gender Violence

Samuel Getachew

In November, we marked the

International Day for the Elimination
of Violence against Women. "Violence
against women is a violation of the
most basic human rights," Prime
Minster Justin Trudeau reflected. "It
destroys lives, tears families apart,
impacts entire communities and has no
place within our society."
I would like to highlight two Canadian
women who have faced tremendous
tragedy in their lives, yet have pulled
them together and are inspiring us
all to embrace better ideals in our
citizenship. They are us at our best,
the way the world knows Canada to

be and behaves in the world. They are

compassionate, passionate, responsible
and are a credit to our citizenship.

Samara Canada Is Facilitating

Important Discussions Samuel Getachew

A decade ago, I attended a gathering
for a now defunct group -- Canada25.

I met inspiring young emerging
leaders who would go on to become leaders
in their communities. The group had a lofty
dream of creating "a culture of innovation that
begets challenging opportunities, celebrates
success, and empowers individuals to fully
utilize their skills and ideas." On the shadow
of Stephen Harper's Conservatives taking over
the reins of our federal government, I felt the
gathering was a great refuge for thoughtful
progressive Canadians. The groups co-founder,
Alison Loat, made a lasting impression on me.
However, I was disappointed when the group
decided to close operation because of lack of
funds in 2007.

Little did I know, the co-founder of
the group, Loat, would soon team up with a
highly successful, shrewd and well connected
billionaire businessman, Michael MacMillan,
to help start a similar organization in Toronto
named Samara Canada in 2009. The group
aimed to help produce "independent research
on the state of Canada's democratic institutions
and attitudes Canadians hold about public life.
Its efforts to date have focused on the federal
level, though the organization's findings have
application to provincial and local politics in
Canada."
Since then, it has become an
important and respected voice all across
Canada.

Last week, I attended a reception for
its Everyday Political Citizen Award. I was in
the audience, when Luke Anderson, won and
gave a touching speech, from his wheelchair.
"As a wheelchair user I am affected by barriers
in our communities that prevent me from
accessing the spaces that I desire," he would
say. This was the same young man, who
helped create a simple ramp and helped 800
businesses become wheelchair accessible.

"The irony of the difficulty accessing
this (Samara's) building underlines the
importance of his work exactly," Samara's co-

founder, Michael MacMillan would respond,

as he handed him his award.

In addition to Anderson, Hana
Woldeyes, a 17-year old Ethiopian-Canadian,
like myself, would also be awarded for her
work helping new immigrants transition to
citizenship. Cory Nicotine, a Cree youth
from Alberta, was also honored for running
a program that helps young people with
opportunities without discrimination.

Samara Canada has indeed become a
special place for those looking to be politically
engaged. It recognizes the emerging leaders
among us, helps us network with the powerful
and facilitates smart political discussions
among its many achievements. For instance,
the book that the group published -- In Tragedy
in the Commons -- by Alison Loat and Michael
MacMillan, showcased an intimate interview
with departing members of Parliament and
become a must-read for new members of
Parliament. This year, I decided to use it as
a holiday gift to friends -- to the aspiring and
successful politicians.

Samara, has also helped release a
report card -- Democracy 360 -- on Canada's
state of democracy and facilitates important
discussions with the likes of Bob Rae, Dave
Meslin and Desmond Cole and helped produce
a report -- "Message Not Delivered", Vote
PopUP and the UBC Academic e-book blog
and Samara blogs and they have all been
valued by many of us.

Like many elitist liberal wellintentioned organizations, Samara lacks
diversity among its staff and board members,
denying itself a rare opportunity to hear from
emerging leaders with unique perspectives and
resources directly. It is a bit disappointing that
it has to make an attempt to inject diversity in
its composition by giving out a slew of awards
to compensate a diversity that is clearly
lacking within its in-house talents. I hope they
know and understand the value of diversity in
a city that is rich and multicultural. However,
no one can deny the fact that this organization
is doing an important and vital public work.

Ontario Announces First 58 Grocery Store

Locations to Sell Beer

Delivering More Consumer Choice

and Convenience Just in Time for
the Holidays

The government is delivering on its

promise to allow beer sales in grocery
stores by announcing the first 58
locations across the province where
Ontarians will be able to buy beer.
Premier Kathleen Wynne and Minister
of Finance Charles Sousa announced
the 13 independent grocery stores and
45 stores owned by large grocers that
are now authorized to sell beer. This is
the first round of Ontario's commitment
to make it more convenient for people
to buy beer. Ultimately, beer will be
available at up to 450 grocery stores
provincewide -- roughly the same
number of locations The Beer Store
currently operates in Ontario. Beer in
grocery stores is part of the biggest
shakeup to beverage alcohol retailing
in the province since prohibition was
ended in 1927.
Ontario

responsibly. The Alcohol and Gaming

Commission of Ontario, which
visited all 58 locations as part of the
authorization process, will now monitor
them to ensure that they adhere to laws
on the safe retail of alcohol. These
include designated sales areas and
hours of sale, limitations to package
sizes and alcohol content by volume,
and rigorous social responsibility
training for staff.
Giving consumers more choice and
convenience while creating a more
level playing field for brewers is part
of the government's plan to build
Ontario up. The four-part plan includes
investing in people's talents and
skills, making the largest investment
in public infrastructure in Ontario's
history, creating a dynamic, innovative
environment where business thrives
and building a secure retirement
savings plan.

which she co-wrote.In January 2015,
Ilwad was invited to brief the UN
Security Council on the Protection of
Civilians debate. The experience was
monumental for several reasons.
It was the first time that a civil society
representative was invited to speak on
this issue before the Security Council.
It was also the first time the annual
thematic debate focused on women's
empowerment
and
participation,
coinciding with the 15th anniversary
of the UN Security Council Resolution
1325.
In 2012, she became one of the first

This was the first time that a Canadian

The other Canadian woman that I

reflected on much this week was - Flora

Igoki Terah. Terah, an activist, was a
parliamentarian candidate in her native
Kenya in 2007. She was up against a
senior government minister and was
asked to withdraw from the race and
not risk the government from suffering
a political defeat. She refused.
Terah was then abducted and tortured.
According to Amnesty International,
"during the attack, one of the men
sat on her, punching and choking
her. Others scorched her wrists with
thorns and cigarettes, pulled her hair
out and beat her with iron bars. A disc
in her upper spine was dislodged.
The assailants shaved her hair, mixed
it with excrement and forced her to
swallow it." When that wouldn't deter
her political activism, her 19-year-old
son was mysteriously killed.
Since moving to Canada, Flora has
worked with reputable organizations
such as the Canadian Lawyers Abroad,
the Jean Sauve Foundation and
McGill University to advocate against
violence, bullying and women rights.
For her efforts, she was made a recipient
of the YMCA Quebec International
Peace Medal. Earlier this year, she
became a Canadian citizen and authored
a book -- Life Beyond Pain -- on her
political activism in Kenya. She is now
on the verge of taking the Government
of Kenya to the United Nations Human

"To end global poverty and injustice, we

need to recognize and nurture women's
leadership," former Ottawa Mayor,
Marion Dewar, once reflected and it
is true. As the Canadian government
engages in the world once again and
tries to reconstruct our reputation
abroad after Stephen Harper's last
decade in power, I hope we also realize
that Canada's greatest ambassadors

Ilwad and Terah are great exemplary

citizens to emulate for ourselves, our
neighbours and our government. As
they make a positive mark in our world,
I cannot help but wish them both the
very best!

The world must not forget the jailed journalists of Ethiopia

By Michelle Kagari and Nani Jansen

Today, on International Human
Rights Day, the Ethiopian journalist
Eskinder Nega, who was convicted
on trumped up terrorism charges, will
have spent more than four years in jail.
Eskinder is just one of many Ethiopian
journalists currently languishing behind
bars, merely for doing their job. But
unlike other journalists incarcerated on
spurious terrorism charges such as the AlJazeera journalists freed from Egyptian
prison earlier this year, the plight of
jailed journalists in Ethiopia attracts little
attention from the international community
and the media.

Whilst the Aljazeera journalists,
Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher
Mohamed, became household names, few
people outside of Ethiopia will have heard
the names of Eskinder Nega,Temesghen
Desalegn,
Solomon
Kebede, Yesuf
Getachew, Woubshet Taye, Saleh Edris,
and Tesfalidet Kidane. They have all fallen
foul of Ethiopias 2009 Anti-Terrorism
Proclamation, which criminalizes any

reporting deemed to encourage or

provide moral support to groups and
causes which the government considers to
be terrorist.

Eskinder was arrested after
publishing an article on the Arab Spring
in which he asked whether a similar grassroots movement for democracy could take
hold in Ethiopia. He was charged under the
draconian Anti-Terrorism Proclamation
with providing support for terrorists and
sentenced to 18 years in prison. He has been
held in Addis Ababas infamous Kality
prison where 8,000 inmates are held in
cramped, dilapidated and poorly ventilated
cells.

Temesgen Desalegn was covering
Eskinders trial and that of other journalists
for Feteh (Justice) newspaper. In response
the authorities prosecuted him for contempt
of court. In October 2014 he was sentenced
to three years in prison on charges of
defamation, inciting the public through false
rumors and false publication. The charges
were in response to articles published in
August 2011, February 2012, and March
2012, including articles on youth protests
against the government. Delasegn has
been denied medical treatment for chronic
medical conditions since his imprisonment.

Woubshet Taye was arrested
a couple of weeks after he published a
column in Awramba Times that critically
assessed the ruling partys performance
in its two decades of rule. He is currently

serving a 14-year sentence in Zway prison.

Despite the recent release of a small number
of young bloggers and activists popularly
known as the Zone9 bloggers and Reeyot
Alemu, ahead of the visit to Ethiopia by US
President Barack Obama last July, dozens
of other journalists are still behind bars.
The Zone9 were charged with terrorism
on 18 July for having links to the Oromo
Liberation Front (OLF), an outlawed
group; for allegedly planning attacks, and
for attending digital security training. They
were charged with conspiracy for using
basic online encryption tools that journalists
routinely use to protect their sources. By
the time they were released, they had spent
a year and a half in detention.

Ethiopias civic space is marred
by deeply entrenched institutionalized
violations of human rights. Journalists who
dare to offer dissenting views are often
silenced, or face arbitrary arrest, torture
and detention. In January 2014, the statecontrolled Ethiopian Press Agency and
Ethiopian News Agency published a report
claiming that the Addis Guday, Fact and
Lomi magazines were promoting terrorism
and damaging the economy. These media
houses were subsequently shut down by
the government. In the face of certain
imprisonment, journalists working with
these media houses fled the country. Many
incidences go unreported, reinforcing a
culture of fear that has fueled an even

greater cycle of impunity and violations

by security agencies. The Committee
for the Protection of Journalists (CPJs)
2014 prison census found that Ethiopia
was the fourth worst jailer of journalists
in the world, with at least 17 journalists
behind bars. Ethiopia also ranked fourth
on CPJs 2015 list of the 10 Most Censored
Countries.

In 2012 US Senator, Patrick
Leahy, commenting on the conviction
and sentencing of Eskinder Nega and
other journalists said that [m]islabeling
legitimate
journalistic
criticism
of
government repression as terrorism is an
insidious abuse of power. Human Rights
Day is a time to reflect and remember these
forgotten journalists of Ethiopia and add
our voices to the call for their release. Their
only crime was to assert their freedom
of expression by speaking out against
injustices, questioning abuse of power and
violations of human rights.

Journalists are at the frontline of
human rights reporting. They frequently put
themselves at risk in order to bring human
rights violations to the attention of the
world. In return, the world must not forget
them as they are voices of the voiceless and
have sacrificed their liberty

The Daughter Of A British Man On Death Row In Ethiopia Has Written To The Queen For Help[buzzfeed]

Andy Tseges 8-year-old daughter
says: With David Cameron in charge the
situation will not be solved. Updated: The
Foreign Office told BuzzFeed News that
a formal letter has been sent to Ethiopia
regarding his treatment.
Alan White
BuzzFeed News Reporter, UK

The daughter of a British man on
death row in Ethiopia has written to the
Queen to ask for her help in setting him
free.

Andy Tsege, a father of three from
north London, was snatched by Ethiopian
security forces at an airport in Yemen in
June 2014. At the time he was waiting
for a flight to Eritrea, but he was taken to
Ethiopia having been sentenced to death in
his absence for allegedly plotting a coup,
which he denies.

According to campaigners, the
real reason he faces execution is that he
fell out with former prime minister Meles
Zenawi after exposing corruption.

In October, BuzzFeed News
revealed that Tsege, 59, had asked the
British ambassador to Ethiopia to bury me
in England during a meeting.

The letter, sent by his 8-year-

old daughter Menabe and seen by

BuzzFeed News, reads:

Dear Queen Elizabeth,

My name is Menabe Andargachew
I am 8 and attend [redacted name of
school]. My father is currently held captive
in Ethopia the situation occurred 1 and a
third years ago. I am writing to ask your
assistance in these troubled times to bring
my father back would be asking toomuch.

I just wish you could help change the

governments actions towards the situation.
Last year the year sixes in my school and
my brother, sister and I wrote letters to
David Cameron. His reply wasnt very
convincing because at the very least I
havent heard any news and at the most I
dont see any fathers in the house so I have
decided to write to you instead in hope you
will help. With David Cameron in charge
again the situation will not be solved which
is why you need to get him to actually pay
attention to the problem. My sister won
the Liberty human rights award but David
Cameron still didnt do anything.
From Menabe Andargachew

BuzzFeed News has also seen
notes by the outgoing ambassador to
Ethiopia, Greg Dorey, following a meeting
with Tsege on 18 November, which appear
to confirm that Tsege is currently in legal
limbo.

Dorey writes: He had not had
access to a lawyer and nothing had been
said to him about charges, courts or rights
I mentioned that it had been reported in
the media that when a local court had asked
for him to be produced the prison authority
had denied having custody of him. He said
that nobody talks to you or answers the
questions you raise.

Doreys notes also mention that he
delivered a note from Tseges wife, which
he says made Tsege a little emotional.
BuzzFeed News has been shown this letter,
which reads:
Hello Gacho [Her nickname for Tsege],

I miss you so much but I keep
thinking and deep down inside I know this
is a very temporary situation.

There is not a day that goes by that
the kids and I [dont] somehow remember
Papa! And there is not an hour that goes by
I am not thinking how to bring this horrible
nightmare to an end.

But Gacho you need to stay strong.
Please stay strong. We love you and you
matter to us. The kids want their Papa back.
I want my Gacho back. Remember we need
to get old so you can tell me I told you so.

This is not the end. Just dig very

deep and we will do the rest.

Big hug and kisses from me and the kids.
Yemi

Why Are Students in Ethiopia Protesting Against a Capital City Expansion Plan?
northern part of the country.
Social media fills in the gaps
Even as the Ethiopian drought and impending
food crisis makes a rare appearance in local
and some internationalheadlines, little
attention is being paid to the student protests
in Ethiopian media. But despite Ethiopias
highly controlled online environment and the
governments firm grip on communications
infrastructure, social media users are
reporting on the issue, particularly on

Over the past two weeks, students in
Ethiopias largest regional state, Oromia, have
been protesting against a government plan to
expand the area of the capital, Addis Ababa,
into Oromia. Reports suggest security forces
used violence including live ammunition to
disperse crowds of peaceful demonstrators in
the compounds of universities in Oromia.

According to Human Rights
Watch, at least three students were killed
and hundreds were injured across the region
as security forces used excessive force to
disperse student protesters. Other reports
put the number of students killed up to ten.
Although protesters are primarily university
students, in some instances, high school and
primary school children were also reportedly
involved in intense confrontations with
government forces.

At least nine students were killed
by government forces in May 2014 while
protesting over the same issue.
The persecution of Oromo people
The students argue that the controversial plan,
known as the Master Plan, to expand Addis
Ababa into Oromia state would result in mass
evictions of farmers mostly belonging to the
Oromo ethnic group.

Facebook, with additional coverage coming

from diaspora-based media.
Photo widely circulated on social media,
taken from the Facebook page of Jawar
Mohammed.
One Facebook user, for example, hoped
for the world to hear stories of the student
protesters inspiring actions:
The silence has truly been deafening. We
need to see and hear the inspiring actions
undertaken by huge numbers of #Oromo
in #Ethiopia. Tell their story, enable
the world to be swept up in their story.
Considering the complete absence of
freedom to criticize the government or report
opposition stories from within the country,
people around the world reading about it can
help greatly by doing everything possible to
amplify this story.
Another Facebook user, Aga Teshome, took
note of the political power of Oromo youth:
#OromoProtests a call for all
oppressed people in #Ethiopia to support
the ongoing protest against #landgrabing

It wouldnt be the first time the government

has uprooted members of an ethnic group.
Thousands of ethnic Amharas in western
Ethiopia were expelled from the countrys
Benishangul Gumuz region in 2013 in what
critics called ethnic cleansing.

.the Oromo youth are a powerful

political entity capable of shaking mountains.
This powerful political entity is hell bent
on exposing the [ruling party] EPRDF
governments atrocious human rights record
and all round discriminatory practices.

The students have other demands such as

making Oromo a federal language. Oromo,
the language of the Oromo people, is the
most widely spoken language in Ethiopia and
the fourth largest African language. However,
it is not the working language of the federal
government.

While Desu Tefera said:

According to Ethiopian Constitution, Oromia

is one of the nine ethnically based and
politically autonomous regional states in
Ethiopia. Oromo people make up the largest
ethnic group in Ethiopia. However, the group
has been systematically marginalized and
persecuted for the last 24 years. By some
estimates, there were as many as 20,000
Oromo political prisoners in Ethiopia as of
March 2014.
A 2014 Amnesty International report on
repression in the Oromia region noted:
Between 2011 and 2014, at least 5000
Oromos have been arrested based on their
actual or suspected peaceful opposition to
the government. These include thousands
of peaceful protestors and hundreds of
opposition political party members. The
government anticipates a high level of
opposition in Oromia, and signs of dissent
are sought out and regularly, sometimes preemptively, suppressed. In numerous cases,
actual or suspected dissenters have been
detained without charge or trial, killed by
security services during protests, arrests and
in detention.
The ruling elite of Ethiopia are mostly from
the Tigray region, which is located in the

We call upon the media to investigate the

conditions that these students died trying
to expose and resist, to draw attention to
these concerns. Oromia needs a new kind of
reporting by the international media, which
gives voice to the voiceless Oromo people,
who for a very long time have been killed,
mistreated, abused, neglected and repressed
in Ethiopia. Going forward with the current
plan, which ends up displacing tens of
thousands of poor farmers, destroying their
livelihood and depriving their identity, is a
tragedy. It deserves attention. These students
put their lives on the line to draw attention to
the farmers plight.#OromoProtests
Although social media reports are pivotal in
letting the world know about the protests,
they miss a huge chunk of nuance that would
help observers understand how this dispute is
unfolding. Notably, the fact that the student
protests combine delicate ethnic politics,
urban land grabbing and Ethiopias diaspora
communitys involvement in home country
politics.
Given
Ethiopias
highly
controlIed
environment, one might wonder how the
students managed to get organized to
express their grievance in the mid of highly
controlled environment. Despite the firm
grip on communication infrastructure there
are constant update on Facebook and Twitter
about the protest.
Dubious development practices
The story is unpleasantly familiar, as students
are protesting for the second time in less than

two years.

other urban use.

In April and May 2014, the protests began

in response to the governments plan to
implement the Integrated Masterplan for
Addis Ababa. As Addis Ababa, the capital
of Ethiopia, is an enclave within Oromia
regional state, students primarily from Oromia
state accused the Ethiopian government of
attempting to take over land owned by local
farmers in the name of integrating adjacent
Oromia towns into the sprawling city of
Addis. The students further alleged that if
implemented, the Masterplan would result
in Addis Ababa further encroaching into the
territory of Oromia.

Diaspora-based advocates say the unrest

in Oromia is just a part of the general
unhappiness that prevails in the country.
They accuse the government of working for
the benefit of a few people at the expense of
others. They even suggest that the Ethiopian
government covertly encouraged informal
settlement on the outskirts of Addis Ababa so
that they could later find a way to intervene
under the guise of rebuilding the slums and
lease the land to real estate developers.

The government rejected the accusation,

claiming that the Masterplan was intended
only to facilitate the development of
infrastructure such as transportation, utilities,
and recreation centers.
When the protests began the students main
demand was the complete halting of the
Masterplan. In May 2014, the government
did momentarily halt the plan in order to
abate the protests after at least nine were
killed and hundreds of ethnic Oromo students
were imprisoned. But when the government

Ermias Legesse, a high profile government

defector, traces the cause of the Oromo

years ago. In his book, Addis Ababa: The

2000 the Addis Ababa city municipality,

enacted five different pieces of legislation to
legalize the informal settlements, and then
sold the legalized lands to private property
developers.
Most informal settlers on the outskirts of
Addis Ababa manage to establish themselves
for a period of time until they are displaced
by government. Sometimes the informal
settlers are given only a few days notices
before bulldozers arrive on the scene to
tear down their shabby houses and lay
foundations for new investors, Ermias
said in an interview with a diaspora-based
television channel.

Human Rights Council accuses the

Ethiopian regime of inciting ethnic violence,
refutes a report by Bloomberg News

Protests In Ethiopia Leave

by Sahara Reporters, New York Dec 16, 2015

Displaced Amharas from West Shewa Aremya province Dec 2015

Director of the Human Rights Council,
Bitsate Terefe, accused the Ethiopian
regime of inciting ethnic violence
between the Oromos and the Amharas.
Bitsate told ESAT that on December
12, 2015 his office received a call from
Ameya Wereda, and according to his
sources, ruling party officials were
encouraging some of their members to
launch an attack against Amharas, in a
deliberate attempt to instigate violence
between the two ethnic groups.
According to the Bitsate, the
perpetrators have asked the Amharas
to leave the area as the land did not
belong to them. More than 40 homes
of the Amharas were turned to ashes,
he said.
Understanding the severity of the
situation, Bitsate said his office
informed embassies, international
news agencies, and government
officials before it was too late.
He said the situation exacerbated the
next day after an Oromo was killed by
unknown people, but was blamed on
the Amharas. Then, according to the
chairman of HRC, the conflict spread to
eight other localities, as some Oromos,
hoodwinked by the perpetrators, were
out for a revenge.
The Amharas then left their property
and belongings to take refuge in Darge
and Walga. The displaced Amharas
were reportedly in severe psychological
trauma after their houses were burned,
and their properties were destroyed.
During the chaos, some children
disappeared, either they were burnt
alive or they lost track when they were
following their families, the chairman
feared.
HRC wrote letters for concerned
national and international organizations
and the media to bring the issue to their
attention and to stop loss of human
lives and damage to property.

could stop the violence waged against

civilians. He said the administrator
told him on the phone about the
seriousness of the problem problem, as
many houses were burnt and property
was destroyed. The house of the
Wereda administrator was also burnt
as he refused to cooperate with the
perpetrators.
The Wereda administrator said he
knew the identity of the people who
instigated the violence and burnt the
houses belonging to the Amharas.
During the conflict, one individual was
reportedly killed, and 10 others were
severely injured. In total, 124 houses
were also burnt. It was reported that
the local Oromo people did not listen
to the hostile call of the administrative
officers; instead, they helped the
Amhara victims financially, materially
and morally, the report added.
According to Bitsate the victims told
his office that they were not attacked
by the local Oromos, who instead
were helpful to them to get through
this difficult times. They said the
perpetrators were Oromo speaking
local
officials
and
government
operatives.
Asked about the story on Bloomberg
news, as filed by William Davidson
from Addis Ababa, who wrote that the
protest by Oromo students is turning
to ethnic violence, Bitsate said Mr.
William Davidson was one of the
reporters who received our alert who
later called him to talk on the issue.
Bitsate said Mr. Davidson asked him
over the phone whether the ethnic
conflict and displacement was related
to the Oromo student movement, and
he replied to Davidson that HRC did
not have any evidence whether the
student protest had any connection
with ethnic conflict, but reiterated the
existence of ethnic conflict and loss of
life and damage to property.

In a telephone interview he gave

to ESAT, Bitsate hold government
officials accountable for inciting the
violence. The regimes local officials
and police officers, namely, inspector
Hailu Driba, Chairman Asay Getch,
and Commander Genene Beyene were
reportedly the main architects of the
conflict. One the officials has been
heard threatening to kill the Amharas
who live in the area.

The two paragraphs that HRC and I

were cited by William Davidson do not
reflect the views of the organization
and myself, Bitsate said. We only
released alert on the situation and
did not say anything on the ongoing
Oromo student protest, he said.

Bitsate said he contacted Ameya

Wereda administrator and asked if they

Several people were killed during protests in

the Oromia region of Ethiopia on Tuesday,
according to media reports. The protests
were in response to the governments plan
to develop farmland into a new business
zone.
The protests are the most recent clash between
members of the Oromo ethnic group and the
Ethiopian government.
Since November
several demonstrations exploded across 30
cities in the country leading to more than 500
arrests according to the opposition group the
Oromo Federalist Congress.
The violence started when security forces
opened fire into a crowd of protesters. According
to the Ethiopian government, 5 people were left
killed. However, Amnesty International, as
well as the Oromo Federalist Congress, claim
the death toll to be as high as 40.
The party [Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary
Democratic Front] looks to have neither
developed the society -- we are begging food
aid now -- nor democratized the state-society
relationships in Ethiopia.
The Oromo protest movement burns out
of the general socio-economic and political
marginalization and exclusionary features of
the current regime, doctoral student Milkessa
Midega told Bloomberg News.
Yet, according to the International Monetary
Fund (IMF) Ethiopia is set to be Africas fastest
growing economy. The government claims it
desires to use the economic momentum to enact
a master plan of Rational Development.

stressed that the development plan would focus

on real change and not ethnic favoritism.
If there is still a need for further discussion with
communities that is the path the government
will definitely take, Getachew said. It will do
everything to explain why the master-plan is
not an attempt to expand the territory of Addis
Ababa.
However, the master plan has been met with
consistent opposition from Oromo groups.
In April of 2014, similar protests erupted in
the region leading to the deaths of scores of
marchers.
The Ethiopian government has already begun to
use harsh language to condemn the protesters
labeling them terrorists.
According to
Amnesty International, the intelligence services
claimed that the Oromo protesters wished to
destabilize the country.
Such accusations carry particularly negative
connotations in Ethiopia due to the countrys
Anti-Terrorism Proclamation 652/2009, which
allows the government to use any method
necessary against suspected terrorists including
pre-trial detentions lasting up to four months.
Amnesty Internationals Regional Director for
East Africa, Muthoni Wanyeki, expressed her
concerns with the current situation.
The government should desist from using
draconian anti-terrorism measures to quell
protests and instead protect its citizens rights to
freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,
the Amnesty International director said.

From what Ive seen so far in Wolenkomi,
this seems more like a popular uprising than
an organized rebel campaign, or a fringe
protest movement. However, obviously I
dont know what is going on elsewhere.
Yesterday people appeared angry and
defiant after the shootings; not scared and
submissive.

The Horn of Africa is facing its worst

The famine was the subject of a recent

The report documents harsh conditions

the story of Bertukan Ali. The video

that her son, Abdu Mohammed, had

But the Ethiopian government has

Acupuncture improves chronic fatigue symptoms

Adding acupuncture to routine medical
care can help improve symptoms in people
suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome
(CFS). A three-arm randomised controlled
trial was performed by Korean clinicians,
with 150 CFS patients divided into two
treatment groups and one control group. The
treatment groups received 10 sessions of
either body acupuncture (Group A - Baihui
DU-20 plus bilateral Fengchi GB-20, Dazhu
BL-11, Feishu BL-13, Xinshu BL-15, Ganshu
BL-18, Pishu BL-20 and Shenshu BL-23)
or Korean Sa-am acupuncture (Group B unilateral Jingqu LU-8, Taibai SP-3, Shaofu
HE-8, Xinshu BL-15, Qihai and REN-6),
over four weeks. The control group (Group
C) continued with usual care alone. At five
weeks from baseline, Group A showed
significantly lower fatigue scores than the
control group. In addition stress scores were
significantly lower in both treatment groups,
compared with the control group at five

and 13 weeks. In addition, Group B scored

significantly lower than the control group
for depression at 13 weeks. Pain scores in
both treatment groups were found to be
significantly reduced compared to the control
group at both five and 13 weeks.

Writing for the Huffington Post, Dawit

Ayele Haylemariam recently wrote
that the Ethiopian government has
made these denials because there is
no incentive for the government to
work hard to avert famine. He wrote
that the ruling Peoples Revolutionary
Democratic Front (EPRDF), has been
in power for 25 years and has no threat
of being voted out of office because
they rule by force. In the spring of
2015 the EPRDF won 100 percent of
the seats in parliament.
Famine has been a recurring problem
for Ethiopia, where the famine of 1984
left 400,000 dead, according to another
BBC report at that time.
According to the international aid
organization
OxFam,
a
famine
results from a triple failure of food
production, food access and political
response. Crop failure and poverty
leave people vulnerable to starvation
but famine only occurs with political
failure.

HRW
By Felix Horne

Student protests are spreading
throughout Ethiopias Oromia region, as
people demonstrate against the possibility
that Oromo farmers and residents living near
the capital, Addis Ababa, could be evicted
from their lands without appropriate or
possibly any compensation. Social media
is filled with images of bloodied protesters;
there are credible reports of injuries and
arrests in a number of towns; and local
police have publicly acknowledged that
three students have died so far.

The current protests echo the
bloody events of April and May 2014, when
federal forces fired into groups of largely
peaceful Oromo protesters, killing dozens.
At least hundreds more students were
arrested, and many remain behind bars.
Both then and today, the demonstrators
are ostensibly protesting the expansion of
Addis Ababas municipal boundary into
the surrounding Oromia region, which
protesters fear will displace Oromo farmers
from their land. But these protests are
about much more: Many Oromos have felt
marginalized and discriminated against
by successive Ethiopian governments
and have often felt unable to voice their
concerns over government policies.

Of the student protesters detained
in 2014, some have been released. Those
I spoke with told me about the torture
they endured as part of interrogations.
But countless others remain in detention.
Some have been charged under Ethiopias
draconian counterterrorism law for their

role in the protests; others languish without

charge in unknown detention centers and
military camps throughout Oromia. This
week, five students were convicted of
terrorism-related offenses for their role in
the protests.

There has been no government
investigation into the use of live ammunition
and excessive force by security personnel
last year.

Ethiopias tight restrictions on
civil society and media make it difficult
to corroborate the current, mounting
allegations and the exact details of the
ongoing protests emerging from towns
like Haramaya, Jarso, Walliso, and Robe.
The government may think this strategy
of silencing bad news is succeeding. But
while the fear of threats and harassment
means it is often months before victims
and witnesses come forward to reveal
what happened in their communities, they
eventually do, and the truth will emerge.

The government should ensure
that the use of excessive force by its security
personnel stops immediately. It should
then support an independent and impartial
inquiry into the conduct of security forces
in the current protests and last years as
well. Those responsible for serious abuses
should be fairly prosecuted. This would be
the best way for the Ethiopian government
to show its concern about the deaths and
injuries inflicted on the students, that it does
not condone the use of live ammunition
against peaceful protesters, and that those
who break the law are appropriately
punished.
