Friendship Assignment
Subject: English Literature
Grade Level: 7th
Subject/Unit: Friends & Family in The Lightning Thief

Overview

Students will be introduced to the essay about friendship they will write.
Within groups students will come up with qualities that they believe
make up a good friend.

Objectives

Students will create a multimedia project describing the characteristics


that make a person a good friend and why they chose those qualities.
Students will then be able to use these characteristics to evaluate their
own characters relationship with Percy.

Materials

Surface- for student notes and the assignment instructions

Standards

7.SL.2.5:
Acknowledge new information expressed by others, and consider it in
relation to one's own views.
7.SL.4.2:
Create engaging presentations that include multimedia components and
visual displays to clarify claims and findings and emphasize points.
7.SL.2.1:
Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one,
in groups, and teacher-led) on grade-appropriate topics, texts, and issues,
building on others ideas and expressing personal ideas clearly.

Procedures

1)
Have students copy the assignment from the classs
Content Library into their own OneNote Notebook.
2)
Go over the assignment and make sure students
understand that these characteristics are a personal opinion and do
not have to be backed up by any evidence other than their own life
experiences.10 mins
3)
Have students break up into groups of their seat trios.
They will brainstorm what traits they consider in a good friend.
Have the groups come up with as many as possible. Each student
will record what traits they believe are important and use the group
discussion to give them more ideas. 10-15 mins
4)
Bring the class back together and have each group share
3 or 4 of their ideas and why they chose those traits. ~10 mins
5)
Have students create a personal list of 6 traits (3 good for

friendships & 3 bad for friendships) and have them work


individually on planning their project for the remainder of the class.
Extensions

Since the written portions of this project will be done in class, I will be
available for students to ask questions or receive any help they need.
