Building Online Portfolios

By Kartini Handoko

From the sources I have read, online portfolios have definitely replaced the old
ways of having thick, chunky scraps of papers to organize an individuals experiences
and accomplishments. A growing number of institutions are encouraging the use of online
portfolios instead of paper portfolios today. Its benefits goes from being very convenient
and easily accessible, to providing chances for individuals to express their creative
aspects in designing their e-portfolio. Essentially, an e-portfolio is an extensive rsum
that links to an online repository of a student's papers, problem sets, pictures from studyabroad stints, and anything else that demonstrates the student's accomplishments and
activities. The purpose of an e-portfolio is to show off to potential employers their talents,
skills and experiences.
According to the article written by Ross Miller and Wende Morgaine, titled The
Benefits of E-portfolios for Students and Faculty in Their Own Words, building an eportfolio help students to be able to integrate all their knowledge and skills. E-portfolio
helps students to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses. Students will then know
how to selectively choose what is best to show off in their online portfolio. E-portfolios
provide a rich resource for both students and faculty to learn about achievement of
important outcomes over time, make connections among disparate parts of the
curriculum, gain insights leading to improvement, and develop identities as learners or as
facilitators of learning.Today's busy college students -- many of who juggle classes,
work, volunteer activities, and more -- can easily lose sight of the big picture.

However, getting professors to grasp the idea of e-portfolio has been pretty
challenging. Having been accustomed to the traditional paper-binder portfolio, as well as
having very little knowledge about technology and the internet, it is difficult for them to
get used to the use of e-portfolio. Hence, with a small amount of professors being able to
teach the concept of e-portfolios, the introduction of it to students can be challenging.
