UNITOVERVIEW
Thisunitbundlesstudentexpectationsthatfocusonthepropertiesofmatter.Athoroughunderstandingofthesepropertiesprovidesstudentswithafoundationtocontinue
theirstudyofchemistry.
Priortothisunitinelementarygrades,studentsbegantodevelopanunderstandingofthephysicalpropertiesofmatter,mixturesandsolutions,relativedensity(floatingand
sinking),andthedifferencesamongthestatesofmatter.InGrades68,studentsextendedthestudyofphysicalpropertiesthroughanintroductiontochemicalproperties,
measurabledensity,andtheexistenceofelementsandcompounds.
Duringthisunit,studentsreviewandextendtheirunderstandingofthephysicalandchemicalpropertiesofmatter,asmanifestedinelements,compounds,andmixtures.In
accordancewiththeTEKSscientificinvestigationandreasoningskillsalignedtothisunit(C.2E),studentsusethesepropertiestoplanandimplementcomparative
investigationsinordertodeterminehowtoseparateamixtureandhowtoidentifyunknownsubstances.Planningandimplementationoftheseinvestigationsincludes
demonstratingsafepractices,askingquestions,formulatingtestablehypotheses,andselectingequipmentandtechnology.Studentscollectandorganizedataandthen
analyze,evaluate,andmakeinferencesandpredicttrendsfromtheirdata.Studentsalsocommunicatevalidconclusionssupportedbythedata.
