Romeo and Juliet Themes Sonnet
Fate is what brings two lovers together;
But it is also what drives them apart.
As each seeks mindlessly for an answer,
They have yet to learn, it lies in their heart.
Love is a smoke made with a fume of sighs (1.1.197)
And brings the burden of passion and pain.
But this is the key to love without lies,
For through pointless strife comes eternal gains.
Does passion blaze by destiny alone?
Or is a flame needed for love to burn?
Fate can truly ignite love on its own;
Although despise will always have its turn.
It is through love that suffering can end
And through petty hate that love fails to mend.
Theme Explanation
In Romeo and Juliet, the two main characters display a relationship that emulates the
theme of love and fate being real. From their unexpected love at first sight, to their ironic hatred
for each others families, to their untimely deaths, Romeo and Juliet have proven to have a story

that is the epitome of fate. In my sonnet, these themes are explored as the thought of fate is
expressed and progresses through the sonnet. The poem opens with an introduction of how fate
and love intertwine in two ways; to bring lovers together, or to drive them apart. This reflects the
ideas of Shakespeares play because fate brought Romeo and Juliet together, and drove them
away from their past lovers. The poem then continues to say that love brings passion and pain;
this is an accurate representation of what love has done between these two lovers as they feel an
inseparable bond from the day they met, but have to combat the thoughts and opinions of their
conflicting families. Finally, the rhyming couplet closes the sonnet with a final, powerful
thought: love ends suffering, and hate hinders the progression of love. Romeo and Juliet has this
message embedded in its story. Romeo and Juliet were miserable, depressed, and lost before they
found each other, ending their suffering. All they wanted to do was be together, but the strong
hatred between their families kept them from each other. Although the ending was tragic, fate
kept its promise and brought the two together through death.
