4 QARs: Question-Answer Relationships

As you read The Giver, you will naturally begin asking questions. Use this sheet to record your
questions and the answers. Do not be frustrated if some of your questions are never fully
answered after you finish the novel.
Here are four question-answer relationships (QAR)that will help you complete this guide.
1) Right There The answer to the question is found in plain sight in the text. You can point
to the answer and say, Its right there.
2) Think and Search the answer is in the text, but you have to look in several places and
gather multiple ideas together to formulate the answer.
3) Author and You The answer is NOT in the text, but you need to think about the
information the author has given you and add it to the knowledge you already have to
formulate the answer.
4) On My Own The answer is NOT in the text at all. You didnt even have to read the text to
formulate the answer.
