Review of Shakespeares Midsummer Nights Dream
As a performer of this production of Shakespeares Midsummer Nights Dream, it is
difficult to set aside my own personal bias for the quality of the show itself. I believe that it was a
very well done production for the Gingerbread players, and it was very successful according to
the box office, which is what truly matters in the end. This will allow the theater to continue
performing shows with the money they plan to carry over for their spring musical production. On
such a small stage, the actors have limited mobility at times and often need to control their
expressions as not to overplay the small stage. On a much larger stage it is required of you to act
using large expressions and use big stage movements, otherwise it would be hard for your
audience to grasp, the opposite is true on a small stage as you do not want to accidently overact
when your audience can see every little detail of your expression clearly. I felt the experienced
cast kept the balance and it was a good production and I am glad I was a part of it.
Andrew Dinan, the man who played Nick Bottom had a spectacular performance with
Phillip Joseph in the Pyramus and Thisbe scene at the end of the show. It was laugh out loud
funny and really helped set the mood for the closing of the show. Oberon, Titania, and the fairies
were also very good at their roles. I also played Demetrius against Lauren Butlers Helena,
though at first I felt uncomfortable playing against a much older woman. I began to adapt and get
used to it and I did not feel like I noticed the age gap as rehearsals went by, there really was
nobody else who could have played it as well as her for our production. Personally, I feel my

performance was satisfactory but I can do better than this in the future. This is my first play that I
ever performed in, and getting a good lead on the first try is a very outstanding accomplishment
to me. I hope in the future I can continue to improve and be as professional as an actor as
Andrew Dinan.
