ROUTINE

1.1.2 CHANGING OVER THE WATCH


Changing over a watch should not be carried out whilst the vessel
is undergoing manoeuvres.
When changing over watch, the relieving watch keeper should satisfy
themselves regarding the following:

Any Standing Orders and other special instructions from the Master
relating to Navigation of the Ship.
Position, course, speed and draft.
Prevailing and predicted tides, currents, weather, visibility and the
effect of these factors upon course and speed.
Status of main and auxiliary engine controls.
Status of watch keeping arrangements in engine room or machinery
spaces
The operational condition of all navigational and safety equipment
being used or likely to be used during the watch.
The errors of gyro and magnetic compass.
The presence and movements of ships in sight or known to be in the
vicinity.
The conditions and hazards likely to be encountered during the
watch.
The possible effects of heel, trim, water density and squat on
underkeel clearance.
