CASE 1
• A 35 year-old patient has been diagnosed with
a malignant brain tumor. After some
consideration the neurosurgeon decides to
excise the tumor. Three days after the surgery,
the patient starts developing shortness of
breath as well as severe chest pain. 24 hours
after the patient expires. Any thoughts?
• Upon autopsy the following was found:

findings?
• How would have a ventilation/perfusion
scintiscan looked like? (refer to the next slide)

• A 26 year-old Olympic ice skater undergoes
left hip replacement after sustaining severe
injuries to the left lower limb following a
horrible fall. There is no previous medical
history nor surgical history. Today is post-op
day 6 and the patient has developed severe
dyspnea. A Chest radiograph scan was
performed and the following was found:

• Describe the findings?

• Twelve hours after obtaining the X-ray, the
patient complaints of left arm and leg
weakness.
• A D-Dimer test was ordered.
• What would you expect the results to show?
• Explain the pathogenesis of the current
presentation.

• The following images were brought by the
mother at the time of admission:

• A patient presents to the ER with severe chest
pain. The patient states that he abruptly
started having trouble breading, also that he
coughed up blood. Upon evaluation, you
notice tachycardia and a friction rub best
heard at the left lower chest. A CBC was
ordered and it was noticed that there was an
increased in serum billirubin and LDH.
