OurGoalsforIntroductiontoWesternMusic(i.e.ClassicalMusic)areto:1)developand
enhancelisteningskillsinrelationtoWesternMusic,2)analyzeWesternMusicwithinhistorical
context,3)analyzetheintersectionofWesternMusicwithplaceandenvironment,4)considerthe
intersectionofWesternMusicwithCulture(s)/Society(ies),and5)increaseknowledge,skill,and
confidenceincriticallyunderstanding,conversingandwritingaboutWesternMusic.Wewill
accomplishthesegoalsthroughassignedreadings,listeningassignments(insideandoutsideof
theclassroom),lecturesanddiscussion,weekly(1page)reflections,listeningresponses,agroup
presentation,andanethnographicwriteup(finalpaper)ofaliveWesternMusicconcert.

ASSIGNMENTSUPONWHICHYOUWILLBEGRADED(approx.600points)
1. WEEKLYREFLECTIONS(200points):EachFriday,a1page,doublespaced
(around300words)reflectionwillbeduetotheANGELdropbox.Thesewillbe
gradeduponyourefficientuseofcoursecontent(readings,listeningassignmentsand
inclassmaterial),howwellwritten(length/clarity/useofthemes),and(reflection)
personalexperiencewithmusic(15pointseach,195pointstotal)
a. Week1GenerativeThemesReflection:OnthefirstFridayofthesemester
(August28),youwillreflect(1page,doublespaced)onameaningful
experienceyouhadwithmusic,analyzewhatyouwrotefor3or4themes
ofyourmusicalexperience.Thesethemeswillguidefuturereflections.(5
points)Thisprojectwillbedescribedmorethoroughlyduringthefirstclass.

2. LISTENINGRESPONSES(85points):Sincelisteningisanessentialcomponent
ofMusic005,wewilllistentomusicthroughoutthesemester.Duringatleast17
classes,listeningresponseswillbeturnedinandgraded(5pointseach).
3. INCLASSGROUPWORK(100points):Duringpreparationforgroupprojects,
mostclassperiodswillincludewrittenPEERassessments,fiveofwhichwillbe
chosenrandomly(20pointseach).*Thecourseinstructorreservestherighttoraise
(butnotlower)peerassessmentscores.
4. GROUPPROJECT(150points):Ingroupsofapproximately5students,youwill
find/chooseaWesternMusictopic(e.g.composer,composition,performance,style)
thatexplicatesanaural,social,cultural,historical,orcriticalissuerelevanttoday.
UsingPowerPointorsimilarpresentationformat,eachgroupwillshareandleada
discussionaboutthistopicandtheinterconnectedissues.Each
presentation/discussionwilllast1classduration(@50minutes),andwilloccur
weeks11through13.ThesewillbegradedusingacombinationofSELF,PEER,and
INSTRUCTORassessments(selfassessment50points,peerassessment50points,
instructorassessment50points).
5. FinalPaper:ETHNOGRAPHYOFAWESTERNMUSICCONCERT(50
points):YouareresponsibleforattendingaliveWesternMusic(classical)concert
andpreparinganethnographicreviewofthisconcert(5pages,doublespaced).
DatesandtimesforappropriateconcertsatPennStateAltoona,andUniversityPark
willbepostedtoANGEL.ThispaperisdueonorbeforeMondayoffinalsweek,
5/2/2016(50points).Thisprojectwillbeexplainedinclass,includinghowtowrite
ethnographicobservationanddescription.
6. ADDITIONALGRADEDASSIGNMENTS(0to50points):Additional
assignments,projects,andquizzesmaybeassignedbasedontheclasssunique
needs,strengthsandweaknesses,andinterests.Thesemaybedesignedbythecourse
instructororjointlybetweenstudent(s)andinstructor.Note:manystudentschooseto
dothisasextracreditpresentationsduringthelastweekofclasses.Examplesof
previous15minuteassignmentshaveincluded:aFlutePerformanceandTalk
(Mozart),NobuoUematsu(themusiccomposerfortheFinalFantasyvideogames),
FreestyleRapBattles,andEDMasaCommunity.
ATTENDANCE:Attendancewillbetaken.Itisagoodideatoarrivetoclass,ontime,to
maximizelearning.Pleasebeontimeforclass.Ourcommitmenttopunctualityandthevalueof

musicalrecordings.Itisimperativethatallstudentslistentothemusicalexampleswithrespect
fortheirfellowstudents.Conversationandotherdisruptivesoundsmustbeavoidedinorderto
activelylistentothemusic.Allcellphonesandotherelectronicdevicesforindividualusemust
beturnedtovibrate/silentduringclass.Avoideatingnoisyfoodproductsonceclasshasbegun.

WORKINGTOGETHER:Youwillcollaborateonmanyassignmentsthroughoutthesemester.

crucialinformationforyoursuccessinthisclassandwillaffectyourabilitytosuccessfully
completetheWeeklyReflections,ClassParticipation,GroupProject,andFinalPapergraded
assignments.
