Political Cartoon: The Reformation

Cartoons as an artistic creation emerged during the Renaissance. Painters like da Vinci
would actually sketch out portions of paintings that would take days to create. The word
cartoon actually comes from the Italian word cartone which means big paper.
Political cartoons present a satirical look at the world. Here is an example of a modern
day political cartoon.

Your job is to create a political cartoon with your partner dealing with some aspect of the
Reformation (problems with the Catholic Church, indulgences, Martin Luther,
predestination, Henry VIII, the Huguenots in France, Absolutism, the Glorious
Revolution, etc.). Just the fact that Henry had six wives is not something that would be
the subject of a political cartoonyou need to do more thought than that!
Use the back of this sheet to create your political cartoon. It can be in black and white,
no color necessary.
Once you have drawn your political cartoon, you need to come up with three discussion
questions about it. You will then trade with another group, look at their cartoon, and
answer the discussion questions that they have provided in your notebook.
