Movie Dialogue (Slide 1)

Description: Confucius and his loyal disciple Zilu

are having one of their daily philosophical

conversations in their native state of Lu following
the war against Ding in 484 BCE. They are
standing just outside of the city limits looking into
the city and reflecting on their 14 year self-exile
from the city.

Confucius (C): It is funny how things in life

complete their cycles

Zilu (Z): To what are you referring?

Movie Dialogue (Slide 2)

(C): My heart and feelings about my state: Lu. 14

years ago I left upon my own will, though my

safety may have influenced my decision, thinking
I would never return under the current Duke
Ding, yet having traveled far and wide, here I
stand where I began.
(Z): Well, times and people do change. You said

yourself dont fear abandoning your faults (Book

1, Chapter 8)

(C): While it is true that I believe that, I do not

believe the Duke has abandoned any of his
faults. I wish to be involved in the government

Movie Dialogue (Slide 3)

(Z): Do you wish to take back to the high road

and continue to spread your knowledge and

thoughts. One can never gain enough knowledge
through experiences.
(C): My ear is an obedient organ for the reception

of truth (Book 2, Chapter 4), and I believe I

should focus my time on besting the community
and myself. Travel is good for acquiring
knowledge, but what use of knowledge do I have
but to help those who have helped me?

(Z): That is a great point Master.

Movie Dialogue (Slide 4)

(C): However, it is important that I do not forget

what I have learned and seen, and how things

may change away from home. If you dont
consider what is distant, there will be sorrow near
(Book 15, Chapter 11).

(Z): I believe the same could be applied

regarding looking to the future and planning
ahead. If you are not prepared for the future,
what will you do when the future becomes the
present?

(C): You show great wisdom as well Tsze-lu. Yet

there is no time like the present, and its passing

Movie Dialogue (Slide 5)

(Z): Youre right! Let us return to town and begin

doing any of the good deeds and tasks we are

capable of. Lead the way master.
(C): Onward my friend. Keep moving forward, but

looking back for guidance.

Both men are wearing tunics down to their knees,
with belts. Due to the cold weather of the
evening the men are both also wearing pants,

only allowed to wear either blue or black due to
the emperors demands. However, each wears a
