Although nowadays we dont believe so much in myths and legends, there were
times, it may seem ages ago, when people really believed these stories about
ogres, fairies and dragons. They were terrified and went to great lengths to
protect each other from the evil that surrounded them. All this advice that people
put together for their protection against creatures that lurked in the dark we now
find in books or are passed on from generation to generation for entertainment,
but some of these mythical creatures are quite dreadful. Lets take for example
the Black Shuck from English mythology, hes the canine embodiment of Satan
himself, or Samca out of Romanian myths, a very ugly demon spirit that is large
and has a crooked smile. There were also creatures that did not sprung out of
pure evil but devoted their immortality to helping people, such as Brownies, in
the UKs myths, said to inhabit houses and aid in tasks around the house or
Zna, fairy like creature that protects children who are in the woods and other
good people that need their help. These are mere examples of beings that lived
in a land of myth, in a time of magic.
Sometimes we need a place to escape our reality, a place where we feel were all
powerful and that is a magic land full of creatures we can only imagine or read
about. This is why I believe mythical creatures make a great topic of discussion
and they can bring some light into our lives when reading fairy-tales, but they
can also be our anchor into a cruel reality where we should be aware of the evil
that lurks in the shadows.
A culture's mythology is a powerful tool for psychology, casting light on the
culture's shared unconscious. There is no better way to understand a culture
deeply than to know and appreciate its myths, its stories, its dreams.
Myth makes clear every culture's similarities like Muma Pdurii and The
Changelings, in our case, who both steal human children and replace them with
their own, though the most important and obvious similarity between the two
cultures is their need to believe in magic and stories of dreadful creatures. It is
the psychological factor that unifies us, even the mere mention of Samca or
Black Shuck sends chills down your spine whether you are British or Romanian.
So, when you will try to find out everything you can about the culture of a certain
nation do not overlook their mythology because it is as important as their
literature or their art, if not a lot more.
