A PLANNED CITY
Penn designed Philadelphia carefully
Expected people to be merchants instead of farmers, so he located the city close

to where the rivers met

Trading by ship was key to the citys economy
1712 major center of business, 20,000 people lived there
Roads extended from the city and linked Philadelphia to the countryside
Philadelphia became a leading center for education
First city in the colonies to have a library (1731)
First city to have a magazine (1741)
Law school (1790)

PENNS LEGACY
Penn had to spend a lot of time in England to take care of business
Spent less than 4 years in PA
During his absence, conflicts arose
Land conflicts between colonists and Native Americans became more frequent
Eventually leads to war

Penns legacy, or lasting impression, lasted long after his death

Framers of the constitution reviewed Penns past laws
Ideas about religious freedom, fair trials, and participation in government were

included in the Constitution

Still exist today
