Body Mass Index As Risk Factor Hypertension

Abstract
The increasing prevalence of hypertension is an important public health problem
contributing to morbidity and mortality. Hypertension is the condition which
describes the high blood pressure that gives the symptom for some body organs such
as stroke and coroner heart disease. The increase of weight can be the risk factor of
hypertension. The main problem in this observation is to observe about: is there an
association between the body mass index and hypertension (systolic blood pressure/
SBP) and diastolic blood pressure/DBP). This research is done through analytical
observational with cross sectional approach. Population of the research was the adult
people that be aged 25 -64 years old that lived in Sekadau Hilir (Mungguk Village)
subdistrict Sekadau Regency, whereas 95 sample werechosen consecutive sampling.
The instruments were questionarrie (question and answer method), the weight scale,
microtoa, sphygmomanometer, and stethoscope. Data was analyzed in univariate and
bivariate analyses, with Mann-Whitney association test and Spearman rho
correlation test. The result of statistic test would get from p-value 0,128 ( SBP: p=
0,128>0,05) and 0,001 (DBP : p= 0,001<0,005. It means that there was no
association between the body mass index and systolic blood pressure (SBP) and there
was association between the body mass index and diastolic blood pressure (DBP).
Body mass index was not significantly and positively correlated with SBP, correlation
coefficient (r) was showed by r = 0,157. Body mass index (BMI) was significantly and
positively correlated with DBP, correlation coefficient (r) was showed by r=0.511.
Keyword: systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, hypertension, body mass
index.
