bookfind.Iwasbrowsingthroughthebooksonsalewhichwerepileduponabigtableonthesecondfloor.Iwas
aloneforsometimeuntilthecornerofmyeyecaughtashadowbesideme.IdidntlookbutIfiguredthatitwasa
man.Hespoketohimself.
Itwashereyesterday,saidthevoice.
Ididnttakethebait.Ijustignoredhim.Havinggrownupinasmalltown,Iwasalwaysremindedtobewaryof
strangers.DowntownManilawasfullofcrooks,myfolkswouldalwayssay.
Themancontinuedshovingthebooks,painstakinglypeeringatthebottomofthepile.
IwantedtoavoidhimsoIdecidedtobrowsethroughtheregularlypricedbookswhilewaitingforthemantoleave.
AsIstartedtomoveaway,Ilookedup.Iwasastonished.Iveseenthatmanbefore.Icouldntbelieveit.Wasthat
reallyhim?
Onlyafewyearsago,IdraggedmysistertoFortSantiagotowatchastageplay.Butmorethanthethrillof
watchingastageplaydirectedbyLinoBrockaandstarringLolitaRodriguez,CharitoSolisandPhilipSalvadorin
theflesh(soclosethatyoucouldliterallytouchthem),wasthechancetoseewhatmanyconsideredasthe
greatestFilipinostageplayeverwritten.Theplaysauthordidnotevenfinishhighschoolbuthewasregardedas
thegreatestFilipinowriterinEnglish.IhaveseentheEnglishplaysfilmversionbutIhadbeendreamingofseeing
itonstageevenifithadbeentranslatedtoPilipino.
MysisterandIwaitedlonghoursontheconcretebenchoutsidetheopenairRajahSulaymanTheatre.Beforethe

photographwithhim.AsIpulledoutmyoldreliablevintage50sKodakcamerawithrotatingflashbulbs,some
cluelesskibitzerswonderedwhothatmanwas.Iwastheonlyonewhogavehimthatkindofattention.Uponmy
request,hequietlysignedmycopyofthebookofhisplay.EversinceIreadhisstoryaboutawomanwholookedat
themirrortoseeherfuturehusband,Ihadbeenhookedintohisworks.Iboughtallhisbooks:novels,stageplays,
reportage,poems,childrensstories.Hehadalwaysbeensomeonebiggerthanlifetome.
ThatafternoonatNationalBookstore,IstoodcatatonichalfwaythroughtheshelvesofregularlypricedbooksasI
cametotherealizationthatthemanstandingbeforemelookedliketheauthorofthestageplaywhichIsawwith
mysisteratRajahSulaymanTheatreafewyearsago.Iwasspeechlessforamoment.Then,Isummonedallmy
gutsandaskedhimifhewasthemanIthoughthewas.
Yes,saidtheman,barelylookingatmeashecontinuedrummagingthroughthebooks.
Whichbookareyoulookingfor?,Iasked,stillinaweofhismagnificentpresence.
TheHeartoftheMatter.Isawithereyesterday,thistimewithwarmthinhisvoice.
Myeyesjoinedhissearchforthebook.Noonespokeaword.
Afterafruitlesssearch,heslowlymovedawayfromthetableandheadedforthestairs.Ilookedup.Hestopped
andgrabbedthestairsbalustrade,thensmiledatme.Heraisedhisrightarmandmotioneditintheactofdrinking.
Icouldntbelieveit.ThismanwhomIadoresomuchwasinvitingmeforadrink.Andweonlymettoday!Hedoesnt

Iwasverynaveandafraidatthattime.Itwasgettingdarkoutside.Besides,Ihaventtastedbeerinmylife.Iwould
notbeabletohidethestenchofbeerwhenIgethome.Ipolitelyshookmyhead.Hewasgoneinaninstant.
Afterayear,IsawacopyofGrahamGreenesTheHeartoftheMatteratNationalBookstore.Itwasonsaleagain.
Iimmediatelyboughttheonlyremainingcopy.
Later,IsawthemanagaininRizalAvenue.ButIdidnthavethegutstoapproachhim.Hewaswalkingbrisklywith
ayoungboyinschooluniform.Hisnephew,Isurmised.
Tothisday,IcouldnthelpbutwonderwhatcouldhavehappenedhadIjoinedhimforadrinkthatlateafternoon.
Whoknows?HecouldhavesharedwithmehiswritingsecretsandIwouldhavebeenacelebratedwriterbynow.
Orperhaps,thingscouldhaveturnedoutdifferently.Theelusiveandunpredictablewriterthathewas,heoncetook
acaballthewayfromManilatoBaguio.
ButIhavetoadmitthatIfeelasenseofregretathavingpassedupthatrareopportunityofsharingabottleofbeer
