This video is very interesting. I think it is relevant to the engineering design. The
IDEO team was asked in the limited time to design a new shopping cart. Firstly, they take
into account the new product development background. For example, because there are
too many children were injured by cart, and there are many cart was stolen. Secondly,
they conducted a survey of market demand. The survey has security staff, sales and
customers. After back to the studio, they started brainstorming, and then discuss with
each other, while the ideas were stuck on the blackboard. Then, they made a new type of
sample cart, which has some new features. For example, people are put side by side a
plurality of portable basket on the cart shelves; installing a scanner in a shopping cart in
the car, so customers can scan the goods at the same time they take the goods off the
shelf, which can help you save time; there is a special position in the child protection
system and so on. Finally, they tested the new product in the supermarket and get a good
evaluation. I think we need to follow some reasonable steps to do product design. First of
all, we need do market research before starting design. We need a clear direction. For
example, what is the most important scenes of this product is, for what audience, solve
any problem, solving thinking what is, and so on. Second, we should began to design and
reflects the spirit of innovation. Third, we should discuss the design, and integrate
different ideas. Fourth, we need to make a sample, then test it. Finally, we need to modify
the program according to the user's feedback, and to determine the final parameters.
Before watching this video, I did not realize the importance of market research before
beginning design. Because a person merely rely on imagination something that is
unrealistic, it will have no market value. Only belong to life in the design, it is the real
design. In addition, the team is also important. Integrating different ideas together, the
final design will be more comprehensive. I always believe that one plus one is greater
than two.
