Automotive Management Capstone

Artifact 1-2: Concept to Market Project

Matt Manatrey

Automotive Marketing-1, AMGT 301, Fall 2019

Program Learning Outcome:

SALES AND MARKETING Students will demonstrate the ability to effectively analyze, present, and
facilitate the development and management of products and services from conceptualization to product
end-of-life.

Executive Summary:

This project consisted of being creative and working together as a team and coming up with a plan for a
new product that was coming to the market in the near future. For this project, we came up with
software, not a product for Toyota and Lexus Vehicles that did not include Android Auto and Apple
CarPlay. At the end of the project, we were to present the product as a sales pitch, based on the popular
TV show Shark Tank. The instructors present acted as the judges of the competition and we were asked
questions about the product before the judges were to award for the best product.

Reflection:

There was a lot to unpack from this project. This was the first project that involved the use of teams in
the Automotive Management program at Ferris, and the project was something that I was not expecting
as a first year automotive management student. While our project was something that was definitely
needed, I think that if we were to do it over again, I would have chosen another product, and not
something that is just a software update. Overall I think the experience of this project was something
that had a positive impact on my education. After this project was said and done, I was interested in the
marketing side of things in the automotive industry. I enjoyed the interviews that I performed for this
project as well, and this project really spurred my interview skills that are so important not just in this
class, but all of the classes in the Automotive Management program. I think this project was a very
useful foray into the world of automotive marketing and I think that this project helped to cement a lot
of marketing knowledge that have helped with other classes and have also carried over into the working
world as well. The presentation style was something that I enjoyed as well, Shark Tank is one of my
favorite television shows and I think that having a shark tank style presentation was something that I
enjoyed. I actually spent an entire afternoon watching Shark Tank before the presentation in order to
see how other “Sharks” would introduce themselves, some funny and useful “skits” the sharks
performed to demonstrate the product they are pitching, and also how they handled the criticism of the
judges who were reviewing their product and things they did to improve the product, before looking to
see if the product was relaunched with the improvements online.
