Capstone Project Proposal Good Copy

By: Armand Deu

Title:
I am going to make a total of eight automotive videos, on how people can save money on doing car repairs
themselves and what are the potential risks involved of them doing it themselves.

Inquiry question:
How can you save money on car repairs and maintenance by doing things yourself, and what are the potential
risks involved?

Rationale/context:
I have chosen to explore the topic of saving money on car repairs and maintenance through do-it-yourself
methods as it aligns with my deep passion for cars. This inquiry question allows me to combine my interest in
automotive engineering and cost-effective solutions. I am eager to uncover practical ways for car enthusiasts
like me to minimize expenses while learning about the potential risks involved in do-it-yourself car
maintenance. By researching and sharing this knowledge, I hope to empower fellow car enthusiasts and the
everyday community to enjoy their passion without breaking the bank.

Background:
My background knowledge relevant to my current area of inquiry is rooted in my automotive studies during
both grade 11 and 12. Additionally, my interest in this field has been nurtured through friends and family who
share a deep passion for the automotive field as well.

Career connections:
My inquiry question directly relates to my passion for the auto field and my career goal of becoming a front-end
software engineer for major large car brands. By being very interested in this industry, I believe that
understanding car repairs and maintenance not only helps me personally save money but also enhances my
knowledge and credibility in the field. Also with my graphic design experience, a front end engineer is what the
users that click on the website see, so I’m already equipped with the design asset skills and visual appealing
traits. Also, it’s essential to know how to efficiently maintain and repair vehicles, which can be a significant
cost-cutting strategy for car enthusiasts like me. This inquiry question aligns perfectly with my academic and
career goals, as it allows me to acquire practical knowledge while saving money and gaining an edge in the
competitive automotive industry.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections:

0
1. Referring to the core competencies and subject areas, the ones that will be connected to my capstone
project will firstly be communication. Communication will be used in my project as I will be making
TikTok videos as I will communicate to people in need of help in cars, to communicate my project as
well as a website to present and an exit interview at the end of careers in the new year. The subject
that will be mainly focused on this core competency would be my English class last semester and next
semester, as communication skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening, are fundamental
to overall success.

2. The second core competency that applies to my capstone will be critical thinking as I will be needing to
analyze the issues of common car problems, investigate the problem and resolve a solution that fixes it.
The subject that connects to this core competency would be my automotive class, in my automotive
class we are able to analyze complex automotive systems, troubleshoot mechanical issues, and apply
logical problem-solving techniques to diagnose and repair vehicles, all of this requires critical thinking,
to think outside the box and to find a solution to an outstanding problem.

3. Lastly social responsibility is largely connected to my capstone as I will be positively contributing to the
community by providing informative videos that not only teach people but lets them learn it as it’s a very
valuable skill to have and to share with others. The subject that will be connected to this core
competency would be in Chemistry 12 this year, I had made a project reflecting on catalytic converters,
which I then shared towards my class *like contributing to the community* to further knowledge them in
that area, and hopefully teach them something that they can share further on.

Capstone Presentation medium:

For presenting my project capstone I will be using cap cut to configure and finetune the videos before
uploading to TikTok to present in front of the viewers, also as TikTok is a easy access resource for help to the
public and anyone wanting to learn new skills on how to save money when working on their car.

Description of my Capstone project:

Following the near end of CLC 12 and reflecting upon my capstone it has been a great success, and
throughout this description, i will be reflecting upon my success. The main focus for my capstone
project is on how people can save money on car repairs and maintenance by doing things
themselves, and what the potential risks involved. At the start of my capstone, I needed to first
investigate and research what the most common/recurring problems involved in gasoline cars/
common maintenance that the general public does not know how to do and go to other people to pay
them for these fixes, I also had to be cautionary because I also explained in these videos using voice
over’s on capcut, of what the potential risks involved in doing these fixes yourself rather than going to
a professional in this field, I had explained this because as my videos were geared towards people
with little to none knowledge in cars, and we all know that when we try something new for the first
time it may not go so smooth, so explaining the risks involved gave my viewers a good understanding
if they are applicable to the application at hand. To answer my inquiry question I have created
informative and user-friendly few-minute-long TikTok videos to investigate these common problems
that everyday people won’t know how to fix and theoretically teach them how to do their own
maintenance at the end of the day instead of going to someone else for their needs which saves them
money, aswell as stated before including the potential risks involved. Referring back to the few minute
long TikTok videos I had included throughout the videos; what the common problem is, how to
1
address this problem (check if you have this problem on your car), and how to resolve the issue step
by step using tools that can be found at home or at stores. For the videos that I created, I made a
total of 8 which I had researched what to address using my resources and online academic sources,
and after I had filmed the raw videos on my phone, used cap cut to edit these videos to make it user-
friendly and engaging/eye-catching to publish to TikTok and to present. I used TikTok as my main
resource to upload my videos to the public because TikTok is a very easy app to get your creations
shown throughout the community, and after researching more people tend to use TikTok in their
everyday lives apposed to youtube. I had also studied what the potential risks involved in each video
specifically speaking to what I’m teaching/fixing, I had researched this and also explained it at the
start of the video as a caution of doing your own work rather than going to a professional. Following
the end of my capstone project, the product I had produced was, a series of automotive videos on
how to work on your own car and how to be precautionary doing your own work.

Resources/ Technology/Skills:
The resources and technology that I require for this project will be: Firstly a camera to film myself doing the
tutorials which will be my phone, Cap cut which I have access to on my personal laptop to edit the videos
before publishing to TikTok and my automotive class / at home to have access to resources and tools which I
will need to use in order to complete the videos and tutorials. I proposed an idea towards my automotive
teacher: Mr. Ekkert, to have opportunities to work on my capstone as well as balance and incorporate class
work to be efficient throughout this semester.

Mentors/Community Connections:
The mentors and connections I will need for this project will be people with a good understanding in the
automotive field as I need to comprehend which types of tutorial videos I will be making and ask my mentors
what the possible risks are in doing the fixes yourself, they will also help me with figuring out common issues
and maintenance that everyday people encounter. Accessing these mentors is quite easy because I have a lot
of family members and teachers that have a really good understanding in the field and can help me with issues
I encounter and give me criticism on my video’s on how to make them better and more understandable.

Project limitations:
Some project limitations and potential obstacles stopping me from completing my capstone could include: first
cars come in various makes and models, and repair procedures can vary significantly. It might be challenging
to cover all types adequately. Focusing on common or popular models might be more manageable. Secondly
creating 8 videos might be very much time consuming as I have a homework most of the time and a job that I
have committed to, so time management is very important to meet deadlines and being efficient in the amount
of time I’m putting in and progression.

Other considerations:
I will be making many of my videos in my automotive class, and at home and this way it’s easy to access
specific tools and lifts if I need. After researching specifically on what the most common problems are with
people with little to none knowledge in the field, the 8 different videos I will be making will be: How to check
your oil/change, how to check and fill tire pressure, how to change your cabin air filter, how to change your
2
headlight blub, how to change your windshield wipers, how to change your battery, how to polish headlights
and how to top up and change your window washer fluid.
