Capstone Project Proposal Draft

Name of student: Ervin Matthew Villamin Date: October 15th 2021

Teacher: Ms. Lacroix Block: A

The Capstone strand I have chosen is: Occupation

Proposed title for my Project Proposal: (write the proposed title for your Capstone Project in one
clear sentence): How hard is it to build a computer? Turns out not hard at all!

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

How can I incorporate life examples and different teaching techniques in my video to help
others understand how to build a computer?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect
to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

Everyone learns in a different way. One person could teach a subject in one way and you
would find it hard to understand, however another person could teach the same subject in a
different way and suddenly you become an expert on it. I love computers, I built my first one
on my own in 7th grade and I continued to build computers for my family members. The joy I
received when I built my computer and it booted was one of my fondness memories. I want to
help others achieve that happiness. I need to learn how to make my videos engaging to help
others find a passion for computers.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this

area of inquiry?

The most important thing is that I already know all the computer parts and what they do.
Connections I have also included that my mom was going to be a teacher before she changed
her mind here in Canada. My grandmas on both my parent’s side were both teachers in the
Philippines as well. I can ask them for advice on what worked for them when they were
teaching.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

My intended career area at this point of time is teaching. I also love computer which connects
with my inquiry question because I am trying to make a video explaining how to build a
computer.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Subject areas that will be used for my project are computer studies, and video production.
Video production is connected to my project because I want to make a list of videos of
different parts of computers and what they do. This will require me to shoot and edit my own
videos to post on YouTube. Creative thinking will be the biggest core competency I need to
focus on. Everyone learns in different ways, I need to make the video entertaining enough to
keep my viewers focus.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to
present your project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once
completed. You may use a combination of mediums.
o Electronic portfolio: Prezi or PPT
o Physical portfolio
o Website
o imovie presentation
o YouTube channel

YouTube channel: I will post multiple videos on different parts of a pc and explain what they
do. After posting multiple short videos I will post one long video of taking all the parts I talked
about and incorporating them in a how to build a computer video.

1
Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what
will you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced
at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your
proposal.

Computers have been my interest ever since I saw my older friend playing Minecraft on her
laptop when I was 6 years old. After seeing her play, I wanted to try it too which led me to ask
my grandpa to buy the game for me. While I started off playing Minecraft as most kids do at a
young age, I started to lose interest as I got older and wanted to branch out to other genres of
games. As I continued to branch out to other games I noticed that my family pc could not run
the games I wanted to play as the computer was too slow. This is what led me to learn how to
build a pc and eventually, building my pc after a year and a half of saving.

The end product of my Capstone Project is a YouTube channel with different videos
explaining how different parts work in a pc and a final video explaining how to use those parts
and put them together to make a working pc. While I have many ideas in mind, I still need to
research different ways to shoot and edit a video. Other than shooting and editing videos I am
extremely confident in my ability on explaining how specific computer components work and
how to put them together to make a working pc.

Just as I said, I will need to research different ways to shoot a video and how to make it
engaging to keep my viewers entertained. While I can just google different ways how to shoot
a video I had a better idea that came into mind while watching a YouTube Video. I spend a lot
of time on YouTube, I use the app Everday. This is because I watch a ton of different content
that ranges from tv show/movie deep dives to podcasts, to vlogs, and to people just reading
manga/manhwa. Any spare time I have at home, I usually use it on watching YouTube. The
idea I came up with was to make a small list of ideas on how Youtubers I watch shoot and
make their own videos. Hopefully, from these ideas, I can use some different elements and
styles and make them into my own. For example, one channel might like using a lot of voice-
over with B-roll running. Others might like the complete opposite with some channels enjoying
just doing one cut for a video and doing small edits here and there. There are no wrong
answers on how to shoot my video. I just have to be as creative as I can. The examples are
right there in my subscription box.

Explaining how parts in a pc work and making a final video showing how to put them together
to create a working pc is the part I am most confident in. I know how to build a computer like
it’s the back of my hand and has built them more times than I count on my fingers. While
building a pc my seems hard at first. It is pretty straightforward and can take less than 1 hour if
everything goes right. I plan to take apart my pc and use the parts from it for my videos
explaining what each specific part does. After posting multiple videos on the parts themselves
I can make a final video putting all the parts back together and showing the end product.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and
skills you will need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to
access/learn all of the resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail
your plans.

Resources I will need include computer parts, video editing software, and a computer itself to
edit on. I luckily have all 3 at home. I build a new computer last December and will be able to
handle any task I give it. I also kept all the boxes and can use them as props for my video. My
brother as well has his own video editing software and he can lend it to me and teach me how
to use it. I plan for my videos to be small sit down style videos.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will

you need to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you?
What is your plan to access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this
project?

Mentors that will help me complete my capstone projects are luckily close by. I can ask other
teachers around my school. While helping other students during my volunteer mentorship, I
can take ideas that teachers use to help teach students and incorporate them into my videos. I
can also ask the computer studies teachers if I ever get stuck on explaining how to build a
computer.

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

Project limitations I can see happening are camera quality and audio quality. I don’t have
access to a high end camera and will have to be satisfied with just my phone. Obstacles I can
see happening are learning how to use the video editing software. I have never used a video
editing software and can see myself struggling using it for the first few videos.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about
your project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

• I should look at other technology youtubers and grab ideas on how they shoot their
videos

References: Provide a literature review of 5-10 PEER REVIEWED ACADEMIC references:

research, videos, etc. that offer some preliminary research you have done for your project
that shows you are able to access the key information that you will need to be able to
complete this project/work. Your list should be written using correct APA formatting.
