My Inquiry question is: What makes a How-to tutorial video successful for the viewer?
Background: Some background information that I will need before starting this area of inquiry in
woodwork is understanding the tools and safety behind each tool. Understanding the tools and safety
will give me the ability to demonstrate to other people for them to learn. As well as knowing how to
work and upload videos on YouTube. I am going to post the process of building a bar on YouTube, so I
need to understand how to work and use YouTube.
Career connections: This project is connected to my future job because I want to go into a trade. This
project is a steppingstone for my future as it is a very good start into carpentry. Building a bar gives me
that opportunity to show myself and others that these are the steps that I need to take in order to build
a project and I think this is a great project to introduce that.
Interdisciplinary and core competencies connection: My connection for core competencies is Creative
Thinking. This project is Creative Thinking because the project (building an at home bar) requires a lot of
creative design, as well as a lot of planning. I will be designing this project from scratch, with limited
resources to challenge my knowledge in this area of my high school education.
Mentors/ Community Connections: My mentor will be Ms. Dahl (the woodwork teacher) as she has
been helping me throughout my whole high school experience. She will be helping me with the design
process with helping the building of the bar.
Project limitations: The project limitations that I may face are the design process and making sure that I
will spend my time very wisely as I will have a lot to do in such a short amount of time. I need to ensure
that my resources and time need to be protected at all costs.
Other considerations: Some other considerations would be being able to keep track of my process.
Being able to document and show all my work will be very difficult as I will just want to build my project
and not think twice about it.
