• The Capstone is a unique and demanding challenge.
In completing it, what did you learn about
your subject? Your skill set? Yourself? o I experienced many different obstacles while working on my Capstone project. It was one of the biggest academic challenges I faced during my 12 years of school. During my project, one thing that I learned about my subject is that it is much harder than I thought. There were so many different factors that I had to think about while coming up with the design. I did learn a little bit about it, but I feel like I still need way more practice and education to become a professional. My skills using a CAD program improved. I learned how to make different designs using the program, which I didn’t have a clue in the beginning. Things such as a sink, cabinets, doors, and more. I watched countless videos of tutorials that explained what I should do to create something. One thing I learned again about myself is about time management. I think I started later than other people in my class and I regret doing that. I really need to start using my time more wisely, especially because I will be starting post-secondary soon. • How is your project relevant to you, the school or the community-at-large? o My project is relevant to me and a bit to the community. I want to become an architect and I think this project is like a beginning step towards my future career in the architecture business. I thought learning the surface of what I will be learning in the future would be better than just diving straight into more complex education. It would be relevant to the community once I start my career as an architect, because building architecture is helpful for the community. Things like houses are necessary for people to live safely. • How did you demonstrate the six Core Competencies throughout this project? o Personal Awareness & Responsibility ▪ I demonstrated this by finishing my project on time. I was aware of the amount of time I was given for this project, although I didn’t use it as wisely as others did, I finished it on time and to the best of my ability. o Social Responsibility ▪ My project was about making a house that could welcome people. I think I made a house that people would want to live in. o Critical Thinking ▪ I had to be critical about many parts of this project. The design of the house, how it would look on the blueprint, and how I would make it on the CAD program. o Creative Thinking ▪ I came up with a unique looking house design that has 4 rooms and 4 bathrooms. o Personal & Cultural Identity ▪ Through this project, I learned what I value and what I am good at. I will be pursuing this career in the future, and this project helped me a lot to figure out myself. • What impact if any did your Capstone project have? o The biggest impact my Capstone has is my skills on using a CAD program. Although I didn’t use every single tool that was on the program. I am comfortable with what I used during the project. I think if I use this specific program again in the future, I will not have to look for video tutorials to make something. It would be a lot easier. • Thinking about the whole process and your finished product, what are you most proud of? o I am most proud of my finished product. I spent the most time on it and it really did give me a challenge. Just completing it makes me feel proud about it. More specifically, I am most proud of the garage floor of the final product. I started with the garage floor first and it took me so long to just make the floor and the outer walls. I had to start over because I messed up the units that I used to make the walls. Just looking at the final product made me jump and dance after finishing it. • What was a difficulty you encountered and how did you solve the problem? o A difficulty that I encountered was making the sink for the kitchen and bathrooms. I just had to come up with one design then I could use it for all the bathrooms but making just one was difficult. I used the architecture tool on the CAD program to come up with floors and walls. However, for the sink I had to use this new tool called part design, which I had no idea how to use. Even after watching several videos, I did not know what I had to do. But I found a video that went through each step slowly and easily. Thanks to that video I learned how to make a curvature on a block. • What is one thing about your finished project you wish you could change? Why? o There is nothing wrong with the design and how I made my house personally. However, I wish I could change the shape of the sink. I made the sink separately from the house and then added it in afterwards. The sink looks bulky and ugly, but it was the best my skills allowed. I still do not know why when I make the sink skinnier it just disappears. I am still wondering. • What advice would you give to a student who will be completing their Capstone Project next year? o There are two huge pieces of advice that I want to give to students who are doing their Capstone next year. The first one being time management. I want to tell them to start early. They should come up with what they are going to do early in the semester, it will give them a lot of spare time to fix up their mistakes and overcome their difficulties. The second piece of advice is, choose what you really like. Although I started late compared to others, I could get it done because I chose what I really like. It was fun to do the project once I started on it. • What source from your research helped you the most? (or least?). o The YouTube videos helped me the most. I can’t choose one video because I used many different channels and videos to help me with different parts of the final product. There are articles written by the CAD program company that wrote how to make designs and use the tools. But just reading has its limits. Looking at other skilled people showing their screens and describing things really helped. • What is one thing about your approach to your project that you wish you could change? Why? o If I could go back in time and change one thing about my approach to thing project, it would be my mindset (although I wouldn’t be going back in time even if I’m given the chance). Looking back, I think I viewed this project as something mandatory to graduate. While this is true, I think if I viewed it in a more positive way, it would’ve made it easier and more relaxed. I tensed up too much for this project than needed which made me stressed about it. If I viewed this as something that would help me then it would’ve given me an easier time working.
