UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma

Unit 13: Extended project in creative media production

The Final Major Project (Year Two)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

FMP unit is the summative unit in the final year of the two-year qualification. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed over the entire course, to complete a creative media production project. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
further clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth

Name Cloe Paget

Disciplines 3D, animation.

(primary/secondary)
(e.g. video,
animation, sound,
photography, 3D,
etc)
Project (e.g., short Timelapse of 3D animation showing building and
film, music video, destruction a church-like building, specifically around a
animation, stained-glass window, that is also a title sequence.
documentary, advert,
branding, etc.)
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)
Throughout the course I have learned how to use Animate, Premier Pro, After
Effects, Cinema 4D, a Mac computer and some camera/audio equipment.
I hadn’t heard of Cinema 4D before this course but now I have learned and
enjoyed using it, I want to use it to make something cool for my FMP. While I like
2D animation, I have done that for a lot of my past projects and I wanted to try
something different. This project might be a bit difficult since I still don’t know
everything about Cinema 4D but I want to try to make something that could look
professional and I feel that this project will challenge me in a creative way.
I love how light looks in rays and I wanted to capture that somehow in something I
made. I thought 3D could work well for this and I had the idea to have the light
come through a coloured window a while ago, and now I’ve had the opportunity to
evolve the idea and use it for my FMP. I am excited to actually see my idea
become real.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

I intend to create a time lapse of a church-like building being created and
destroyed, which centres around a stained-glass window and the light that passes
through it. It will be a title sequence for a show that is set in a post-apocalyptic
world. I will do this using Cinema 4D and it will be about a minute long. I will
probably find a music track from Bensound or a website like it, chosen in
accordance with the style of the of the video, which may end up being two tracks
to reflect the change in the video when the building crumbles. The title of the show
will be in the video, maybe hidden in the window and will show when the right kind
of light shines through it.
I will use photoshop to create the texture for the window that I will design based off
what I’m inspired by in my research. I will also take photos in real life to help with
research for the window, the actual model of the building and its texture. The
lighting will primarily come from the sun, moon and most importantly, rays through
the window. The light will change to reflect the seasons as time goes by to
increase the feeling of a lot of time passing.
I will need to research tutorials for the parts of Cinema 4D that I don’t understand
yet, and for the design of the building and the window.
For my resources, I will be looking for textures from outside sources as they will be
produced to a higher standard than perhaps what I could create myself.
I will use the provided schedule to stay on task to complete all aspects of my
project.

Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
I will keep a log for each day I work on my project where I will reflect on my work
so far. I will keep track of all of my decisions and any potential changes that may
occur. I will also make notes and sketches in my notebook that I can take pictures
of to upload to my website next to the log entries. Once I start production, I will
take screenshots that will also join the log entries. I will also screen record my
progress to go with the screenshots.
I will ask my friends and teachers to evaluate my progress as well, and include it in
my log entries. I will also conduct surveys to get feedback from my audience
during production as well. I will take the feedback I get from these sources and use
it to better my project by listening and learning to what most people prefer and
using it to develop idea.
At the end of the project, I will gather audience feedback which I will use to create
an evaluation for my work. When complete, I will use this as part of a whole project
evaluation comparing my work to that of professionals, examine where I could
have made improvements and reflect on my feelings overall about the project.

Proposed Research Sources

I will use Pinterest to get inspiration for the design of the window and the building
itself.
I will use YouTube to find tutorials to help me with the things I don’t know about
Cinema 4D.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU0DbJdsO-Q – god-rays
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5NqzAUYv88 – destruction
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wO-ThTu5yII – glass texture
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDLJX7FtUdA – self build

I could use interviews and surveys to do primary research to get information to

help me understand what people want or might expect from my project. I could
conduct the interviews over text chat or ask the interviewee to send me an audio
file of their response.

Equipment Required
I will need a computer that can run the below software without issues:
- Cinema 4D for the main part of the video
- Photoshop for textures
I will need my own camera for visiting churches/cathedrals to take pictures for
texture capture and design reference.

Resources Required
I need to make sure that the machines in the rooms that I will be working in have
Cinema 4D on them and that those computers can run it without issue. I will also
try to make sure that I always have my notebook and pen with me in case I need
them. I will probably use a website like Bensound to find some copyright free
music to use.

Skills to develop/learn
I need to work on my Cinema 4D skills as there are things I want to do for my
project that I don’t know how to do in Cinema 4D yet. I may also need to touch up
my Photoshop skills since I haven’t used it in a while, although I’ll probably be fine.
My research and evaluation skills could also use work.
Personnel and responsibilities
It should just be myself.

Intended audience and context

The target audience is people interested in games like The Last of Us, or shows
like Sweet Tooth or The Walking Dead. The audience would range in age from late
teens to adults.
I think it would also appeal to an audience of 3D animators, VFX artists,
architects/people that enjoy architecture.

The video would be used for the title sequence for each episode of a TV series.

It will be a good example of my current skills in 3D for my portfolio.

Creative Mindsets
Ownership – Everything is mine, not using someone else’s work

Critical Thinking – Evaluating my work each day

Problem Solving – Learning Cinema 4D through tutorials

Creativity – Thinking the idea

Risk Taking – Not knowing everything I need before I start

Collaboration – I intend to work by myself so there probably won’t be any

collaboration for my project

How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick a
theme or themes which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – 10 weeks is not long. Just think how fast this year has
gone so far. Plan ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE OF
INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.
4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you
undertake, the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just
describe but analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against SEVEN Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP
