UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma

Unit 13: Unit 13: Extended project in creative media production

The Final Major Project (Year Two)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

FMP unit is the summative unit in the final year of the two-year qualification. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed over the entire course, to complete a creative media production project. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
further clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth.

Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)
During this course I have improved in my art skills and how to view different tasks
when given to me. I have also improved my communication skills over the course
since I have needed to explain my ideas to lecturers and peers to help them
understand my projects. My overall understanding of the software we needed to
use for this course has improved since the first year. Before I came to this course,
I had a bare minimum understanding of adobe premiere pro and photoshop and
unpredictable drawing skills but since I came to the course all those skills
improved to the point where I can create a project like this confidently.

The main things that helped me come up with this idea for the project was learning
about multiplanar and what a friend of mine did for their yr1 FMP which had some
smooth walking cycles. Also, I want to try aiming to beat the best animation.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

My concept for the FMP is an animation which is based on a message from the
poem ‘Ozymandias’ by ‘Percy Bysshe Shelley’ that no matter how far humans
progress, nature can and will erase our progress (there are other interpretations,
but I can’t come up with the right way to write them). The main plan is to have
constant background changes as to show the progress of humanity to the point
where nature resets everything and to have one figure walking through all of it until
the end where there is an animal which walks across the screen as the
background stops. I will also have a poem that is inspired by ‘Ozymandias’ which
the figure will be saying (and near the end the animal will finish the poem) this
detail can be translated that the figure is nature itself or it’s just an innocent
bystander that is an ancient shapeshifter or the figure is the physical
representation of humanity and when humanity gets erased the animal is the
physical representation of nature (it is up for interpretation depending on the
viewer). The main research with this project will be effective and efficient ways to
accomplish the art style that will be in this animation and walk cycle references.
The result will have a printed-out version of the poem that is in the FMP so that
people can either read along or analyse the poem themselves to further
understand the references. The poem that I am making is a similar style of poem
to ‘Ozymandias’ but from nature’s perspective of the development of humans and
why it always resets our progress when we reach a certain level of technology.
The duration of the poem is dependent on how long the voice recording of the
poem is (but the maximum time is 2mins). I will hopefully create an animation
using multiplanar tracking and an art style like tribal art/ languages.

Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
To keep track of my progress and the structure of my project I will use the
production diary page to keep down what I have done and what I will do later in
production. If there are changes needed to be made when it comes to saving time
or due to suggestions from peers or lecturers, I will also document them as well, as
it will help with marking and helps me understand what to improve or change when
it comes to future ideas.

For certain parts of the production, I will need some opinions from peers and
lecturers on how certain audio sounds and if an art style works with the concept.

Section 4: Proposed Research Sources

Ozymandias poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley, Seasons After fall, Song of the Sea,
Tinga Tinga tales and https://youtu.be/bQnqfrHl2Lg (a peers yr.1 FMP).
Section 5: Equipment Required
Adobe animate, Photoshop, After effects, Audio recording software, Video
cameras, Drawing tablet.

Section 6: Resources Required

Walk cycle templates.
Video of my car walk from left to right.

Section 7: Skills to develop/learn

Drawing in the style like the research sources.
Animating walk cycles
Multiplanar

Section 8: Personnel and responsibilities

It will be me and my mum and maybe my cat (my mum and I as voice recordings
and my cat for potential rotoscoping).

Section 9: Intended audience and context

Intended audience: People who understand the initial metaphors of ‘Ozymandias’
and view the world in that same light. People who remember the Breaking bad
Season 5 ‘Ozymandias’ trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=QnIDeXkOSSU .15+.
Concept: I want it to be shown to a multitude of different groups of people in
environments designed for education and knowledge (colleges, schools, libraries
and film festivals).

Section 10: Creative Mindsets

Ownership: This project is one where I can portray my opinion of the world around
me using metaphors in an artistic and enjoyable way instead of causing debates
amongst others.

Critical Thinking: I will primarily use this mindset for making the poem and
for primary research on whether my mum’s voice should be melded in with
my voice for the reading of the poem and potentially certain colour schemes
for the backgrounds and foregrounds and further advice from peers on what
to add or take away from the original idea.

Problem Solving: The main challenge that I will be encountering is learning

and developing a new art style that I am not used to for this project and
potential problems that may come up is hardware problems, work missing
etc.

Creativity: I am using sources from other forms of media (poems, tv shows,

video games etc) to express an idea/ thought process that I have.

Risk Taking: I am taking a risk by using my voice in this project since I hate
hearing my voice when it has been recorded and I am also taking a risk by
attempting a new art style for my animation.

Collaboration: I am collaborating by having lecturers help me with

techniques relating to the software needed to complete the bulk of the
project and collaborating with my mum when it comes to voice acting
techniques and how to write a poem effectively.

How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick a
theme or themes which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – Just think how fast this year has gone so far. Plan
ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.

4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you
undertake, the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just
describe but analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work, we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against SEVEN Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP
