UAL Level 3 Diploma

Unit 8: Developing a creative media production project

The Final Major Project (Year One)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

Unit 8 is the summative unit in the first year of the two-year qualification. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed in Units 1–7, to complete a creative media production project. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
begin to clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth

Name
Jack Willis

Disciplines
(primary/secondary Photography & animation
)
(e.g. video,
animation, sound,
photography
Project (e.g. short
narrative film,
experimental short Time lapse & experimental animation
film, experimental
animation,
cinemograph, time-
lapse etc. )
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)
Through out not only just unit 7 but through the entire course I have gained so
many new skills e.g., in animation I never knew how animate at all but now I know
a lot more and can not wait to learn how to roto scope. In photography I’ve learnt
so many new skills not only digitally but also physically with the photo camera, I
have learnt new settings and new techniques e.g., time lapsing and in Film I have
learnt so much not just with my editing but new shot types new techniques on a
use of a camera and how to set up the equipment. Throughout unit 7 I learnt how
to conduct research properly and build a site, I also learnt that telling people your
ideas is good so you can follow up on each other’s ideas but not only that I learnt
how to be independent and I think these skills will help me a lot in the long run.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

My Final Major Project is going to use both animation and photography the entire
thing will be one shot instead of a bunch of clips piled up upon each other and it'll
be a good 50/50 use of the two skills animation and photography I will need a
tripod a camera and a RGBS LCD Timer Shutter Release Time Lapse
Intervalometer Remote. This is how I am going to have it as a black screen then I’ll
animate a eye opening as if it’s the viewers eyes opening and as their eye opens
to my project it’ll be a time lapse of something either nature or people/person then
later on into the video either 30 or 60 seconds in it’ll blink again or someone will
walk past at the exact time I need them to and I’d like to shift the whole project
from a time lapse to a roto scope of a time lapse it’ll be frame by frame I animate
the entire thing, it’ll be difficult to do. then at 1 minute 30 seconds or 2 minutes it’ll
blink again either into life again and continue to time lapse or it’ll just loop but I
know at the end.

Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
The way I will Evaluate my work is by recording what I do when I do it this will help
me not only reflect and look at what I did wrong but also plan and see what I can
and will do better by also evaluation my work in real time I can write on how I felt
with the work and the quantity of work done in real time which will also help to
memorise the things that I might forget if I didn’t do real time updates on the work
I have been doing this will also help with my final valuation in the long run of things

Proposed Research Sources

There will be zero text involved however there might be some added audio to
make the project more pleasing
Equipment Required
I will need a tripod a camera and a RGBS LCD Timer Shutter Release Time Lapse
Intervalometer Remote. I will also need an animating tablet and a mac
Resources Required
N/A

Skills to develop/learn
I going to be researching more on roto scoping and time lapsing

Personnel and responsibilities

I will be personally responsible for myself and all of the equipment I will be using
for this project I also may need a friend to help carry equipment.

Intended audience and context

My intended audience is mainly aimed at a younger audience and people who
enjoy watching animation and time lapse

How my project will ‘loop

At the beginning of my project, it will be an animated eye opening then at the end
it’ll be an animated eye closing and will give the effect of the eye blinking when it
loops

How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick an area
which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – 9 weeks of practical work is not long. Just think how
fast this year has gone so far. Plan ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE
OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.

4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you undertake,
the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just describe but
analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against FOUR Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP. Remember that
the lowest awarded grade for any Learning Outcome will be the final grade
for the FMP unit.
