UAL Level 3 Diploma

Unit 8: Developing a creative media production project

The Final Major Project (Year One)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

Unit 8 is the summative unit in the first year of the two-year qualification. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed in Units 1–7, to complete a creative media production project. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
begin to clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth

Name Anna-Sophia de Leon

Disciplines Video
(primary/secondary
)
(e.g., video,
animation, sound,
photography
Project (e.g., short
narrative film, Time-lapse/cinemography
experimental short
film, experimental
animation,
cinemograph, time-
lapse etc.)
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)
Before I started the course, I had some idea of what I was doing in things like
video and theory but in things like animation and photography I was completely
lost. Now, I understand more things in all subjects. Throughout the past 7 units I
leant different skills like how to use different camera angles to create more of an
effect and that lighting actually has a much more of an impact than most people
tend to believe. I’ve also understood how to use different types of software like
premier pro/animate/after effects. These skills help me now in my FMP because
now I can look out for those things and more to make my creation look really good.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

My idea is do something along the lines of fashion of different decades because
different decades look so different to each other in colour. Like the 40s compared
to the 60s with only 20-year difference. I was thinking about different characters in
each disco going into the bathroom and touching up their make up/hair as each
decade also had their own ways of fixing themselves up (60s for women using
hairspray to keep their hair up high and tidy and then for males, hair gel) because
of the stereotype that had grown on them.

 Grease (set in 1959, made in 1978)- (time code 0:50-1:00)

Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
To document this, I will be using my production diary as a way to evaluate each
thing that I had done and why I did it in that way in detail before my official
evaluation as well as putting some detailed paragraphs in my planning page about
what it is and why, if something were to change throughout the time of planning I
will explain why that happened, what makes the new thing better and what made
the old thing not top the new idea that came up. That would also include new pre-
production papers in the planning page.

Proposed Research Sources

For my research, I would use things like Pintrest and YouTube clips to help with
research and probably find some old pictures of different women in their casual
clothing and then finding some dresses that they would wear to proms/discos
during their teenage periods. I think I could also go into my local charity shops to
see different things that have been dropped off there and hope to find some stuff
that could help.
Equipment Required
I’m most likely going to use a camera with a tri-pod and to edit and then to edit the
clips together and add sound/sound effects, I’m going to use premier pro.
Resources Required
For props, I’m going to use different purses and small handbags to then take out
small things like little make products along the lines of lip gloss/ different shades of
lipstick or powder. To go with this, the costumes I have this 60s look alike skirt
from a carnival I had done roughly 5 years ago as well as different
dresses/tops/jeans for each decade. As for sounds I was thinking about looking for
instrumental 20s/30s etc to go in the background while the character fixes herself
up which for location, I was thinking of doing it in a bathroom or bedroom.

Skills to develop/learn
I want to add something along the lines of a glitch for the 50s/60s as if came off a
VHS tape on the telly but I’m not sure how to do that just yet(editing)

-This is roughly what I’m thinking

Personnel and responsibilities

I’m thinking asking someone to help with filming or actually dressing up for this
because I think it’ll be difficult to do by myself. Then to show the different looks on
my planning page, I’m either going have myself dressed up in what I’m roughly
think and then on the actor is going to be the official clothing idea.

Intended audience and context

My intended audience would be the type of people who like old/new fashion,
history because of the context behind each clothing and why it was in trend and
their ages would roughly round up around 14+ that would watch similar type of
videos on social platforms like YouTube or TikTok.

How my project will ‘loop’

For this project to loop, at each “decade change” the character will leave the
room/exit the camera and go back in for the next change (60s leave, come back as
70s). Then on the last one, it’ll be the same but when the character comes back,
it’ll go back to the first decade being either the 20s or 30s, depending on which
was the first decade.
How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick an area
which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – 9 weeks of practical work is not long. Just think how
fast this year has gone so far. Plan ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE
OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.

4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you undertake,
the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just describe but
analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against FOUR Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP. Remember that
the lowest awarded grade for any Learning Outcome will be the final grade
for the FMP unit.
