Unit 8: Developing a creative media production project

The Final Major Project (Year One)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

Unit 8 is the summative unit in the first year of the two-year qualification. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed in Units 1–7, to complete a creative media production project. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
begin to clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth

Name
Kyle Player

Disciplines
(primary/secondary For my final major project I have chosen video and sound,
) because without sound you can’t have a good video and
(e.g. video, without a good video sound tends to mean very little.
animation, sound, Overall I think video and sound are a perfect pair for what
photography my goal is.

Project (e.g. short

narrative film, My final major project will be an experimental short film
experimental short with made and implemented sound effects, including my
film, experimental own voice, as well as music found online. I will use my
animation, skills in media from the past 4 years to use a vintage
cinemograph, time- camera to film my point of view of anxiety and how to
lapse etc. ) overcome it.
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)

Before I even joined this course, I wanted to make something vaguely similar to
my idea, which is a video piece reflecting on my own anxiety, that being said I
never really got onto doing it before this course due to lack of motivation or
procrastinating. However, this course has given me the extra push which is
needed to complete the project. Through the first 7 units I have learnt more about
target audiences and mainly advertising, not only this but I have learnt a lot about
meanings of shots for example; when taking videos or photos they only really
mean a lot to yourself however others that view it just think it’s interesting then
move on, so one way to counter this is have colour corrections which perhaps
describe how the image feels to you and enhances it for the viewers, this is
obviously done through the usage of colour, e.g. a sad scene would need a more
blue/green colour correction. One huge factor of influencing me for my ideas was
recent feelings and struggles as I have been experiencing problems with anxiety
and mental health, however I want to make a project that reflects on my emotions
and how you can seek comfort in the small things in life.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

The main aim of my project is to display how my anxiety feels and is triggered
through the use of video editing and sound, but also how anxiety can be comforted
by the small things in life such as going for a walk in nature or seeing someone
you love, this project comes from my mindset of which anxiety is a thing everyone
has and we have to care for it and almost nurture it for it to keep calm and if you
do not, you become nervous and anxious, my project is mainly from my own
personal battles but hopefully others can relate to it and feel the same way. I have
researched lots of art exhibitions that are depictions of people’s anxiety and the
way they display it through art, one repeated key theme that I’ve noticed is the use
of flowers such as daisy’s which is because different flowers have old meanings
and can be used to show differing emotions, for example daisy’s meaning
innocence and kindness, but a dying daisy could mean nervousness and struggle.
The original inspiration of my project is from a YouTube video I saw about
someone’s trip they took videos of completely ordinary things but they make it so
extraordinary and impressive (link to video), this video is the main reason I wanted
to create my project but with a twist of personal emotion however I want to use
simple shots to express it, simple shots that convey a strong meaning which
everyone has experienced before, for example walking in nature. Resource wise I
will be using a personal camera, Samsung MV800, although it maybe older I want
my project to have a more vintage look to it however the camera still maintains the
quality well, meaning there will be a good balance between vintage style and
quality throughout. I most definitely will be able to complete my project in the
allocated timescale as the shots I will be doing won’t require too much skill and I
can also take the camera with me wherever I’m going, meaning I will be able to get
shots whenever and I also live close to a nature reserve I want to record at.

Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
The way I will be recording my progress is through the use of a production dairy
which I will do every week or whenever I do large amount of progress in work, I will
evaluate my actual project by taking clips of parts I think are worth evaluating as
well as noting down any mistakes I make with screenshots and detailed
description. Another way I will evaluate my work will be by talking about how I feel
its going and has gone, as well as what I will be doing next lesson or next time I
progress. This not only makes it easier for me to move on with things but means I
don’t need to sit at the start of working wasting time thinking of what to do next.

Proposed Research Sources

My biggest influence is a video from YouTube, the video is from a person who is
on a trip to Europe and takes such ordinary yet expressive shots and it really
embodies my personal feeling of the simple things in life can mean a lot, (link to
video). The main idea for my project is to be more nature based this is because a
lot of art exhibition creators display anxiety through flowers and images of nature,
there for my project I will be going to a nature reverse near my house. As well as
googling different flowers meanings and trying to find them at the reverse so I can
write the contrast to anxiety they have.

Equipment Required
To film my final major project, I will be using my own personal camera, the camera
is Samsung MV800, I want my project to have a more vintage older style, however
this camera still maintains quality whilst having an early 2000s camera style and
look. The computer I will be using is my own and College computers to edit as they
can run after effects which will be my primary editing software as that’s what I’m
most comfortable with, furthermore I will use a converting software called
Handbrake to change the render film to AVI (maximum quality) to a mp4.

Resources Required
No props will be required. Location wise it will be in a lot of places such as;
Muscliffe Nature Reserve, my own bedroom and potentially Poole Park. No
costumes will be required. No makeup will be required. All sounds will be
added/placed in by me due to my extensive knowledge of SFX, furthermore I plan
to have little bits of dialogue to help emphasis the meaning of my project, anxiety.

Skills to develop/learn
One thing in After Effects I want to practice on is advanced masking, I want to
have footage of myself opening my bag then I reach inside of my bag into the next
scene which will be the nature reverse, the way I will be doing it is masking then
shifting edge and contrast and using feather to create a somewhat realistic look.
Another skill I want to develop is fake CRT transitions, using a CRT overlay, trying
to make overlays look good as transitions is incredibly hard due to my high
standards I hold for myself, as I want it to be perfect.

Personnel and responsibilities

My final major project will just be My girlfriend and I but for the majority it will be
just myself.

Intended audience and context

My target audience is going to be around my age group as I think mental health is
a thing more experienced by teenagers to young adults, however I want it to be
relatable to all people who have experienced anxiety, but the target age will be 13-
20 which is the age which most experience the worst anxiety. The degree of
interactivity for my installation will be questions which make you think dotted
around the work space however I still haven’t fully thought of my installation yet.

How my project will ‘loop’

For my loop I want it be either a 1 minute loop but have the 2 nd minute different to
the 1st , or have a 30 second loop then have the 2 nd half different, then have that
loop to make it 2 minutes, however I will likely go for the first option of 1 minute.
Another loop I plan to do is start with a solid colour and loop that somehow, this is
because the title of my final major project will be called “What colour is your
anxiety?”, however I haven’t fully decided what I will do for the loop as I plan to
think about the loop when I have some footage.

How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick an area
which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT
2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – 9 weeks of practical work is not long. Just think how
fast this year has gone so far. Plan ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE
OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.

4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you undertake,
the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just describe but
analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against FOUR Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP. Remember that
the lowest awarded grade for any Learning Outcome will be the final grade
for the FMP unit.
