Today I have started to think about what

my title will be and the possible areas that
I can explore with this project. Naturally at
first I thought about researching further
into one of my A level subjects however I
quickly realised that I would like to do
something else to broaden my knowledge
as opposed to focusing in more on one
area.

By the end of this session I have decided

that I wish to create an artefact, and
improving on that I want it to be a
creative/artistic one.

18/06/2015

After some thought I have narrowed down

my artefact type to a stop frame animation
(That will from this point onwards be
referred to as SFA), and I am very set on
this as it seems there is much to learn
about different techniques and the
processes that must be completed to
make an effective piece of work.
As for the type of SFA I am currently
looking at many different options:

Clay animation

Computer created
animation

Paper animation

Whiteboard animation

Flipbook

Time lapse of real

objects
After deciding on the type of animation I

So far I am drawn to whiteboard

animation more than any other kind as
after looking at many examples (See
sources document) it seems to be the
one that I can connect with the most and
it has many techniques that I wish to
look further into. As well as this, from
watching other people's work it seems
that there is a certain mindset needed to
create the animations that these artists
make. Therefore I would like to get in
touch with them to learn some more.

The date you started your project

First thoughts about topic and

working title

I imagine that the type of video that I

make will become much clearer once my
title has been finalised. At the minute I
am leaning towards either the skill based
video or a long story video.

will also have to decide on the type of

video that I make:

One long story

Multiple short stories

Advert

Educational video

Demonstration of
skills and techniques
First thoughts on possible titles:

Create an educational
SFA for GCSE students
accompanied by 2000 words
detailing why it may be more
useful than a powerpoint or
other alternatives.

Create a SFA that is a

demonstration of skill and
techniques accompanied by
2000 words on the processes
and steps involved in making it.

Create a SFA from the

point of view of a company and
assess with 2000 words why it
may be more effective than
traditional advertising.

Create a SFA story

and write a 2000 word essay on
the steps story creation and why
a SFA creates an effective story.

If completing the Diploma,

is topic relevant to
Principal Learning?
If yes
Does the project
complement and develop the

themes and topics for

learners principal learning set
out in the relevant line of
learning criteria?
and/or
does it support learner
progression (skills,
knowledge, understanding?)

What is the title of the project?

This could be phrased as a
question, hypothesis or
statement.

What do you hope to achieve by

the time you complete the
project?

Create a stop frame animation using a

whiteboard that is a demonstration of skill
and techniques, from the perspective of
someone that is trying it for the first time,
and using this to assess why the art form
is very rare and therefore asking is it
accessible to anyone who would want to
do it? accompanied by a 2000 word report
on the processes and steps involved in
making it.

I have decided to do the animation using

a whiteboard as it seems the most
appropriate for my style of art and will
allow me to develop my style using a
completely new process to get to the end
result. As I will be focusing on how the
animation is made I will not make a story
but instead make a roughly 2 minute
animation that allows me to show and
develop all of the techniques required for
making an artefact of this type.

A stop frame animation of up to 2 minutes

in length.
A blog describing the journey of making
the project, including a diary of what
happened on specific days.
A 2000 word report on the stages and
processes involved in making the
animation.

I have decided that the animation should

be up to 2 minutes long, this will not only
make me think more about the timings in
the animation but allow enough time to
demonstrate the techniques and also be
enough time that by the end of the
animation there should be a visible
improvement when compared to the
start.

Artefact with 2000 word report.

What form will the assessment

evidence for the project take?
(ie design, performance, report

with findings from an

investigation, artefact, [report
level 3 only] )

Have you produced an outline

plan to show your project
timeline?

What will you need to achieve

your project? eg tools, equipment,
techniques and technologies

I have made a gantt chart using the google

app gantter, I have written out the overall
plan/ to do list . Also I have made some
Eisenhauer grids to help categorize when i
will need to perform certain tasks

http://92epq.weebly.com/
I will need a whiteboard and markers and
erasers for the drawing aspect, also a
camera and a steady place to put it along
with a place for the whiteboard that will
always have the same lighting.
I will a laptop or computer to use software
to put the pictures together to make an
animation.
I may have to create a tripod out of wood
or buy one.
I will need some lights to make the
animation look as smooth as possible and
not flicker with light too much.
I can use my tablet as I will need a
reference photo to use to make a design in
the animation.

I already have a whiteboard and pens,

although I will get more as they will most
likely run out.
I have decided to use an exercise bench
to hold the whiteboard, the clips that are
used to stop weights from falling off can
hook over the top of the board, I will
mark on the points where these hooks
go onto the board so that if I need to
remove it I can then put it back in exactly
the right place.
I am going to fashion a monopod out of
wood that I can then place in a slot in the
exercise bench designed to hold
interchangeable parts, this is at exactly
the center point of the bench so will
provide a perfect position for the camera
relative to the whiteboard. I will measure
the bench and wood so that i can have
the camera positioned at the halfway
point of the whiteboard both vertically
and horizontally.
I have a bright white torch that I can use
to backlight the whiteboard with to give
more even lighting, it has a clip so it can
be attached to one of my music stands
and remain in a consistent position.
I will use another music stand to put my
tablet on so that i can have it right next

to the whiteboard so i replicate it as best

as I can.

Will you or have you used a range

of sources for your information?

Is the information selected

suitable and sufficient to fit the
question/task/brief?

Have you identified any links with

other areas of study or areas of

Yes, I have learned about google scholar

so I am using that to find out about
animation, however due to whiteboard
animation being a very niche area there
aren't many papers specifically about it
therefore many of my sources are either
about general animation or stop frame
animation, this means that the information
is still relevant.
Most of my sources will be youtube videos
as this is where most whiteboard
animation videos are, I can adopt a watch
and learn technique where I watch and
learn from the video analysing it as I go
along.
I may choose specific videos to replicate
from as it will link to my title to find out how
easy/possible is it for someone to produce
a whiteboard animation for the first time
with the information currently available.
I am also trying to get into contact with the
youtubers that have made these
animations to ask them some questions.
This question will have to be assessed in
the 2000 word report as the title is partly
about finding out how accessible the area
of art is and therefore assessing whether
or not the sources are in fact appropriate
to aid in making a stop frame animation
using a whiteboard. So in reality even if
the sources are not helpful they will still
help answer the question in the title.

interest which relate to your

project?
What skills need to be applied to
use the information you have
collected?

I will need to be analytical to decide what

information is relevant and what is not. As
well as this when using sources in my
report i will have to use Harvard
referencing techniques accurately.

Did you apply the tools,

equipment, techniques and
technologies to use the
information that has been
collected to complete your
project?
What outcomes/objectives have
you achieved so far (mid-term
review)?

I am very close to completing my

animation, It is currently about 1 minute 10
seconds long, I need to redo a 5 second
section at the start and add in a credits
section that will most likely be 10-15
seconds. I have kept a journal of each day
of work, a large bulk of this is from 1 week
in which I made the minute of animation
over the course of about 35 hours. I have
not started my 2000 word report however I
have made a plan for it. This means that I
am very much on track in the long term
plan that I set up at the beginning of the
project. I have also kept up with the
weebly blog to keep track of my progress.

Evaluation of own learning and

performance so far (mid-term
review).

I feel that the project has gone well so far,

with only a few hiccups along the way. I
am on schedule for my tasks so have no
worries about being finished in time. I did
more work than I had anticipated to in the
summer holidays, I wanted to get the
animation fully completed by the time I

came back to college however some

issues with the software meant that this
was not possible. The very latest that the
animation will be complete is the end of
October half term.

Activity

What have you changed after

reviewing your work?

Final phase - Do you feel that you

have achieved all of the
outcomes/objectives of your
project?
Presentation of Portfolio
written section
(compulsory, even if the
outcome is a performance or
artefact)
other evidence can be
DVD, photographs, slides,
CD, artefact, digital

Date

Detail
Following the review I do not feel as though I
need to change anything as I am on track,
having said this I aim to put in 1-2 hours more
work each week to keep up the progression
for the project, I may have to also increase
the amount of hours I put in when preparing
for the presentation if I have not yet finished
the report. But if I stay on schedule then I
should be able to finish the report and then
use that time for the presentation.

Notes
This form should be used to record the progress of each learner and may also assist in forming a basis and justification for the mark
awarded under each assessment criterion (for example, by indicating the level of support needed by the learner).
At Level 3 it is not intended that the supervisor gives any written feedback to the learner in the comments section. Verbal
feedback may be given by the supervisor; this should not be recorded on this form. Learners may use the comments section for
taking notes.
A copy of this form must accompany each learners work when it is submitted for Moderation.
