Element 1.6.b.: Students create original I would like my students to show their
works or responsibly repurpose or remix understanding of final -e (CVCe) words that
digital resources into new creations. represent long vowel sounds using digital
resources to create original works.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students will be able to show that they understand final -e words that have long vowel
sounds (CVCe) by using technology to create an original work.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson will be used to check student understanding of CVCe words. First, I will introduce
what we are going to be learning by explaining the goals and objectives for our lesson. We
will briefly go over silent -e and CVCe words again as a class for a reminder. I will then ask my
students for some fun ways that we can show our understanding of silent -e words. My
students will be allowed to brainstorm and share. This is when I will then introduce digital
storybook creation. I will introduce them to PowerPoint by showing them the “Super Silent -
e” storybook that I created. We will watch the video book together as a class. After the
storybook video is over, I will ask students for feedback on the story. Students will have time
to share with partners what they thought of the book. I will then tell them that they are going
to get to create their own digital storybook on silent -e just like I did. I will explain that they
will be doing this as a table group. Then, we will go over PowerPoint and the steps they need
to execute in order to create a storybook. They will then go back to their table groups and get
their computers. We will all go through the steps of creating the PowerPoint as a class. Each
group will only have one computer they are working on. I will walk around and help groups in
need. Then, students will have 15 minutes to brainstorm ideas of a story they want to create
to explain silent -e and CVCe words. They will do this by filling out a paper story board
(provided by the teacher) as a group before they transfer to technology. Once they have
planned out their stories, they will start creating their PowerPoint digital storybooks as a
group. I will be walking around and checking in with groups to make sure everyone is on the
right track and does not need help. I will ask about their stories and make sure they are
correct in their implantation of silent -e words and their stories make sense. After each table
group finishes their storybooks, they will have the opportunity to share their storybooks with
the class. I will end the lesson by having a whole class discussion about what we have learned
and sharing feedback about what they all thought about their digital storybooks.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
A Digital Storybook through Microsoft PowerPoint is a great way to turn an assessment into
something fun, but using technology can make it easy for students to get off task or for
questions and/or problems to arise. Thus, it is important that my students know and use
some technology management class procedures. Students will all be co-using and co-
engaging with one computer per table group in this lesson, which will help keep them on
track and together in their implementation of technology. This will also help them collaborate
with each other and troubleshoot as a group before coming to me, the teacher. There will
also be some time limits so they can effectively plan during this lesson. There will be a timer
up on the board for them to refer to see how much time they have left to create their
storyboards and then their PowerPoint. Having a written storyboard will also help students
display how they will create this project. This will all promote an environment of
collaboration and creativity for students to stay on task.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The PowerPoint technology tool in this lesson supports many different aspects of UDL. Since
students get to collaboratively create their own story about silent -e, they have a choice in
what they want their story theme to be or how their story goes. They have creativity options,
which promotes engagement in the classroom. There are also different representation
supports provided through the basic productivity tool of PowerPoint (audio and captioning
aspects as well as visuals).

I believe that this lesson will positively impact student learning in my classroom.
Implementing PowerPoint into this lesson will allow my students to actively learn and
collaborate to create something they can be proud to share and portray their learning. I think
adding this extra technology and engagement layer will allow my students to be creative and
have fun with their learning. I look forward to seeing my students work together and create a
story that they find interesting and fun to share.
