Lesson Idea
☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.
x Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.
x Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.
draw pictures to go along with their story. They will then insert their writing and pictures into
PowerPoint. They will then record themselves reading their story. Students will be able to
utilize the technology through school computers that I will reserve for this lesson. As the
teacher, I will monitor the class as they work on their books and address any
miscommunications or questions. The lesson will be concluded by students sharing their
stories with their classmates. Students will receive feedback from their classmates as they
share their stories with each other.
Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?
At the beginning of this lesson students will be expected to work independently while they
are working to get their writing for their story done. Then when they begin to create their
story on PowerPoint, there will be specific time allocated for co-engagement for the
students. They will be working together to create their digital story on PowerPoint. They will
be encouraged to bounce ideas off each other and learn from one another. As the teacher, I
will continue to point them in the right direction and remind them of their learning goal for
this lesson. As students finish their stories they will have the opportunity to extend their
learning by viewing other classmates digital story creations.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
The Basic Productivity Presentation Tool, PowerPoint, that I chose to incorporate into this
lesson supports and enhances the learning experience for all my students through the Action
and Expression principle of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). This activity supports Action
and Expression because students have the ability to choose to write their stories about
anything. This provides students infinite options to choose from. PowerPoint also provides
many supports so that all students can create, learn, and share their work. Some supports
that PowerPoint includes would be text to speech, speech to text, or closed captions, even in
other languages. This enhances the learning experience for all students in the classroom by
making it engaging and accessible.
Reflecting on enhanced learning:
I believe that the activity that I created for this lesson will impact my students learning
tremendously. This is because this activity has encouraged students to be creative and own
their learning. I look forward to implementing the PowerPoint to my students’ stories so that
they can watch their stories come to life!
