What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students will be able to use PowerPoint to create a digital story about the life cycle of an ani-
mal.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

X Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for pre-
sentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of learning
will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by dis-
playing the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog,
presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:
I will show the class my digital story about a frog’s life cycle. Then, I will go over how to use
PowerPoint and help the students get it set up. Then, they will come up with a creative way of
showcasing the life cycle of their chosen animal. For example, they can write in the perspec-
tive of their animal or write as if someone is watching their animal go through the life cycle.
They will create a digital story similar to mine. Students will have the choice to draw pictures
or use pictures from the Internet for their story. They will record audio for their story as well
which I will show them how to do. I will walk around and help as needed and will leave my ex-
ample on a computer for students to look at and listen to as a guide. To conclude the lesson,
students will display their final products on their computers and students will walk around
and listen to each others stories. It will be like a gallery walk but for digital stories.

Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? Co-use/Co-engagement exploration activi-
ties to extend their learning about a topic, time-on-task with continued focus on the learning
goal

This technology will get students actively involved in authentic tasks because they will write
their plan out first with a storyboard to show what will go on each slide. Also, I will go over
the ask 3 then me technique where they ask 3 peers their question first and if no one can an-
swer it, they ask me for help. Students will be able to see everyone’s final product in the end.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

It supports all students by allowing them to record audio and subtitles when speaking. I am
also allowing students to make their story using pictures or drawings whichever works best
for them. They will also be able to personalize their story using different fonts, different pic-
tures, and different backgrounds. This supports multiple means of expression by allowing stu-
dents to showcase what they learned about the life cycle in different ways. They are all creat-
ing a digital story, but they can display their story in different ways through pictures, videos,
backgrounds, etc. It also stimulates multiple means of engagement since students have choice
in what animal they pick, the storyline or script, and the pictures they use.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I think this will impact student learning by helping them learn how to use technology at a
young age. It will also allow students to creatively show their learning with some guidance so
they are not overwhelmed. I look forward to seeing their final products and how creative they
get with their stories because even though I gave them a topic to write about, they can come
up with unique ways to show that they learned about that topic.
