What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

The students will utilize basic productivity tools to create their own story that describes
pollution and how it harms the environment and living beings.
Selected Basic Productivity Tool: Sway

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☒ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I plan to implement the use of the basic productivity tool Sway as a story telling based
project. I will begin by presenting to the whole class my own Sway story about pollution.
Afterwards I will explain to students that they must create their own story that is based on
pollution. This learning target will also be written out in a clear visible area of the classroom.
We will brainstorm ideas together and I will give the students a story board on paper so they
can organize their thoughts and the order of which they would like to present their story.
Once the planning stage is concluded, we will look at the different elements that Sway
provides such as images, audio, captions. I will have student volunteers come up to practice
setting up different cards into a Sway story or changing the format. Afterwards students will
be allowed to independently manipulate the tools and design the format of their story. As
students work on their projects I will walk around and give positive feedback to students. This
will encourage students to learn more about the productivity tool as well as increase their
confidence in their abilities to use technology as a form of expressing their knowledge. As a
way to conclude our lesson they will present their stories in small groups and give their peers
feedback on the presentations.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
When managing technology, it’s important to encourage creativity for student expression
however, there should also be a structure to help students focus on the task. I will begin by
clearly explaining the learning goal and make students aware of the purpose of this
assignment. I will give time for a preplanning stage for students to brainstorm and begin to
build up ideas. There will be a time limit and students will work independently during this
stage to gather their thoughts together. When students begin to design their story on Sway
they will be allowed to work in small groups as to exchange ideas or ask questions,
expectations for collaboration will be explained beforehand. Students will be allotted two
warnings on behavior and if students cannot comply to expectations they will work
independently.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
The basic productivity tool of Sway aids students thinking and caters to different kinds of
learners. For students who are in the third grade there are many kinds of strengths and
challenges that students face. Through the use of this story telling tool the needs of visual
and auditory leaners get met. This tool supports the multiple means of action and expression
because the learner can express their knowledge on the subject through a variety of ways.
Students can write up text, they can record their voice additionally they can insert images or
upload their own drawings not to mention they can also embed online video clips.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

The activity that I have designed impulses students to use their creativity along with
developing technology-based skills. The content lesson that students will work on is relevant
to their own lives and their environment. I look forward to having students create their own
product because they will be able to express their own thinking and share their ideas with
other individuals.
