Lesson Idea Name: Exploring various types of Precipitation

Grade Level/Content Area: 1st Grade/ Science
Content Standard Addressed: S1E1b: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate weather data to
identify weather patterns. Ask questions to identify forms of precipitation such as rain, snow,
sleet, and hailstones as either solid or liquid.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and
be able to do by the end of this lesson:

Students will display their thinking and clearly of weather precipitation and determine
explain using digital resources to create whether each type is a solid or liquid. They
models, visualizations, or simulations. should be able to make a personal digital
story on PowerPoint explaining what they
have learned.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students will have the ability to describe different types of weather precipitation and
determine if each is a solid or liquid. Students will be able to create a digital story on
PowerPoint to display their knowledge on weather precipitation.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson Idea

I will begin by showing my students my digital story on weather. Then, I will ask them to share
with the class what they learned from the digital story. I will evaluate what the students
shared. Then I will tell the class they will be creating a digital story on weather as well. We
will set goals as a class for this lesson. I will write them on the board. I will walk the students
though creating a digital story on PowerPoint and leave written directions for each student as
well. Students will first create a hand-written story board as a script. Students will utilize the
technology by creating their own version of a digital book. Students are able to be creative in
this lesson. The teacher will walk around and help any students and ensure each student is on
task. Feedback will be provided individually with student teacher meetings about each digital
story. I will conclude the lesson by asking if any students would like to share their digital story
with the class. I will ask the students to share positive comments about each presentation.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:

I will have the students learning goals displayed on the board that they made at the
beginning of the lesson for them to relay back to if needed. I will also devote more time to
this lesson because it is new information for the students. I will go over our classroom norms
before beginning this lesson and explain listening is very important during this activity. I will
set the rule “ask 3, then me”. The students will be creating a storyboard for this activity as
well to help guide them through.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The technology tool I selected for my students to use for this lesson supports all of my
students in various ways. It has an option for audio recordings for visually impaired. It also
can be just written on the slide show for hearing impaired. Students with any stuttering or
speech problem can retry the audio as many times as they need. Students are able to put
images on the slides for struggling readers. This can work as individual work or partner work.
This activity can allow the students to be very creative, they could include their culture in
their digital story. This activity has multiple means of engagement because they can select
anyway they want to create their digital story. This also has multiple ways of representation
by using an audio, pictures only, words only, etc.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I feel as though these activities will impact my students learning by showing them there are
always other ways to show their thinking. I think this would be a very engaging activity for my
students. I think each student will feel included because they are able to use their creativity. I
look forward to my students establishing their own goals as a class. I think this would be
extremely helpful for them and will make them more eager for this activity.
