Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: The Stars in Our Sky!

Content Area/Grade(s): 2nd Grade Science
Content Standard Summarized: Students will analyze and understand the characteristics of stars according
to their size and brightness. Students can construct an argument that supports the fact that the sun is not
the brightest and largest star, although it appears to be.
Technology Standard Addressed: Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a
variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media appropriate to their goals.

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft 365 PowerPoint and Screencastify

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. All products of learning are unique and
personalized. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator walking around monitoring the student-led
activity.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): I will support the variety of learners in my classroom by allowing my
students to choose the type of product they express their learning with. I will have options available for
hands on learners, artistic students, students who like to share their work by presenting, and students who
prefer to post their work for others to read on their own. The technology tools such as PowerPoint enhance
student learning by teaching them a new technology tool. PowerPoint can be advanced so I will personalize
this by modeling how to use the tool and helping students with their presentations.

Lesson idea implementation: To introduce my lesson, I will use the audiobook that I created that gives visual
and audial representation of the information we will be learning. I will also show students a BrainPOP video
on stars and their size/brightness. Students will engage in both the audio book and BrainPOP videos by having
open discussions after both have been shown to the class. I will continue to teach the standard by showing
different pictures of stars and how their size and brightness helps to describe the type of star. We will discuss
how the Sun is not the largest and brightest star, although this claim has been made. Students will then
choose which product they would like to create to compare and contrast a large, bright star to small, dull star.
The options for products will be: PowerPoint slide, visual model or project, or voice recording. I will offer
support for students as all 3 of these products may be newly introduced to them. I will extend the student
learning to a higher level by allowing students to present their work in person to the class, or on a Padlet link
so that parents can also view their work. This increases student learning by supporting interaction and
engagement between peers and their parents. The presentations will conclude the lesson.

Reflective Practice: I believe that this lesson supports student learning by letting the students have more of
a voice and choice than they have in most lessons. Students get an option on how they would like to
present a product. Whichever option the students choose, I will have the presentation, or a picture of their
product posted on a Padlet link that showcases their work to the rest of the classroom. This link will also be
shared with parents so that they can see their student’s work on an interactive platform.
