Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: How Did it Grow?

Content Area/Grade(s): 2nd grade
Content Standard Summarized: By the end of this lesson, students would have developed an authentic piece
of work that reflects their understanding of a life cycle of their chosen animal.
Technology Standard Addressed: Creative Communicator Standard: Students communicate clearly and
express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital
media appropriate to their goals.

Selected Technology Tool:

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. All products of learning are unique and
personalized. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator walking around monitoring the student-led
activity.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students will have multiple resources for their project. They can choose to use the web or pick up books
about their animal from the library. Additionally, students will get to pick the animal they are interested in for
their presentation. Students will be given independent time as well as time to consult their ideas or questions
with their peers. This project ensures personalization! Students have the option of working in a group or
individually. Additionally, students will use PowerPoint to create a story and then record themselves to create
an Mp4 file which can be shared with their friends and family. MS PowerPoint has the feature of recording
audio if they wanted to record their presentation instead of presenting it face-to face. The whole learning
experience is enriching because students will have to use various skills to continue to move forward.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will introduce the lesson by reading them the E-book I created, titled “What’s in My Garden?” We will then
have a class discussion about how different types of animals have different life cycles. I will use visuals to aid
me throughout the lecture. Next, I will prompt the students to pick an animal and research its lifecycle.
Students will have a rubric and steps they can follow to guide them through the process. I will also have an
example to show them what their outcome may look like. Students will present their findings on MS
PowerPoint as an e-book. Students will have the choice of picking the illustrations whether they want to draw
it themselves or find some on the web. They will need to provide at least one form of multimedia. I can

extend the student learning by allowing them to share their presentation with students outside of our
classroom. I can even challenge students to compare life cycles of two different animals. We will conclude
the project by presenting their findings in class.

Reflective Practice:
I think that the activities will impact students learning because this is a project that they will be accounted for
for whether they work in groups or independently. They will have independent time with a technology device
(computer/iPad etc) and they will need to learn how to extract information from their resources. I can easily
create a link for students to post their finished products on where parents can view their student’s
presentation. Parent involvement is crucial to a child’s learning path.
