Lesson Idea
X Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.
☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.
X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.
on fossils. I will make students aware of their goals by giving clear and concise
expectations. These expectations are creating their own unique eBook based on how
fossils provide evidence of past organisms. The students will utilize PowerPoint to
organize their information, incorporate visuals, and present their ideas. As the teacher
I will first give my students an introduction of fossils and how they are created. I will
also guide my students in utilizing PowerPoint to complete the assignment. Feedback
will be provided to the students verbally when the students present their eBooks and
written when grading. I will conclude the lesson by taking the students outside to look
for examples of fossils or pass around fossils to allow them to observe.
Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
A way to use this technology that will encourage the students to participate in this
task would be to allow them to work in small groups. Working in small groups will
present my students with Co-engagement as they will be sharing their thoughts to
complete and overall goal. As the teacher I will also monitor what my students are
doing, guiding those who may have gotten off task and get them back on track.
I believe that my lesson supports and enhances the learning experience for all
students in the classroom as they will be able to work individually or collaboratively on
this task. Allowing students to have freedom in how they choose to complete the
assignment supports the engagement component of the UDL framework. Students
having the freedom to engage in this lesson in the way that works best for them will
allow them to feel comfortable and excited to participate. My lesson also supports the
UDL through representation as the eBooks can include subtitles for English Language
Learners.
