What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? Students will create their own eBook
using either PowerPoint, Sway, or Canva to identify and explain igneous, sedimentary, and
metamorphic rocks.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will first introduce the project we will be working on and how it relates to what we have
been learning about igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Then, I will thoroughly
explain the learning goals for the activity. I will establish clear learning objectives by
emphasizing the importance for students to accurately identify and explain each rock type
through text, images, and audio in their presentations. Students will be shown my example of
“Iggy the igneous rock.” This way the expectation of what the project should look like is
modeled and it will be a review for the igneous rock type. Students will be put in partners to
work together through creating their presentations. They will start by creating a story board
to bring their ideas to life in a written design first. Students will utilize the technology by first
familiarizing themselves with the chosen platform's features. They will then begin creating
their eBook by organizing content and designing slides. I will also be circulating the classroom
during worktime to providing guidance and support as needed. This will also help make sure
students stay on track and maintain focus on the learning goals. Although this assignment will
take multiple days, feedback will be given both formatively, through ongoing discussions and
checkpoints, and summatively, through a presentation and review of the completed eBooks.
To conclude the lesson, students will have the opportunity to share their eBooks with their
classmates through presentations.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
The students will be asked to prepare a presentation to identify and explain the three
different types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic). While this is a fairly
independent and student led task, however there will be many management and
engagement strategies in place to keep students on task. The first being that students will be
put in pairs to compete the assignment (collaborative pairs). This will keep students on task
and engaged as they can problem solve together, and bounce ideas off one another. The
students will also be developing a storyboard together before the starting on their eBook.
This will ensure that the students have direction and know where their story is headed before
starting to incorporate technology. Students will also be guided through setting daily goals to
help them along with the pacing if their projects. Again, this will keep students engaged and
on task by establishing something for them to work toward and somewhat of a pacing guide.
Lastly, the students will have time limits when working on their eBooks. They will work on
them during their science instruction time which is typically 35 minutes. This means students
will work for 15 minutes, have a 5-minute break, then continue working for the last 15

minutes. This keeps students focused on the task at hand. Overall, the assignment will be
mostly student-led with certain procedures in place to keep students focused.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The students will be given the opportunity to choose between 3 different options of tools to
create their eBook. Students will be allowed to explore the different platforms and choose
what they feels works best for them. This allows for differentiated ways that students can
express their knowledge. This covers the UDL principle of multiple means of action and
expression.

Students will also be working in pair in order to work through this process collaboratively.
This will allow the students to work through the content and the technology troubleshooting
together. I look forward to seeing what my students make and letting their creativity take
over. I feel like third grade students love to bring a personal flare and creativity into learning,
so I feel like this is perfect for them. This covers the UDL principle of multiple means of
engagement.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

Overall, I feel this lesson will help students to not only better understand the science
standard, but it will allow students to become more familiar with their technology tool of
choice in a fun and creative way. I am most looking forward to seeing what the students
create and how they use their own creativity to represent what we are learning.
