What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students will learn about basic productivity tools and how to use them. After seeing my
eBook example and how it works, I then want them to be able to choose a way that works for
them and create their own short story. While creating their story, I want them to focus on
making a short story and making sure the characters, setting, and plot are clear for when they
share them to the class.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

The students will first watch/read my example of an eBook using a basic productivity tool.
They then will create their own short story eBook using a basic productivity tool that works
best for them. Students will start by making a rough draft, focusing on the story line,
characters, setting, and plot. Once they feel ready to utilize BPT’s, they will start creating
their story. During this process, I will be open for students to come to me for any questions,
concerns, and for me to read their rough draft to make sure they are staying on track. Once
every student has finished their short story, I will have each kid individually share their story
will the class. Each student will be given a handout with sections about the characters,
setting, and plot. As each student presents, their classmates will record what they learned in
each section. For example, students will write the characters names that are presents during
the short story presentation.
Managing the technology/engagement:

Students will have the option of working in groups to talk and engage with other students for
their project. To help students will the process, each student will create a story board before
using technology. Having a written plan helps students stay on track with their story plot
because they will have the ability to fix any mistakes. After each student’s storyboard has
been checked and marked off, they will begin using their basic productivity tool to create
their eBook. Although each student’s story will have a different plot while working together,
co-engagement helps students actively focuses on their learning goals and working
productively.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

PowerPoint is a wonderful tool for students to use to create their short story because it
allows for student’s to be creative and promotes active engagement. PowerPoint supports
UDL principle because it provides multiple means of engagement, representation, and action
and expression. PowerPoint gives students the option to express and represent their
understanding in a way that they choose.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

After designing this lesson plan idea, I feel like this will impact student learning because they
have the chance to use new technology and create it how they choose is best to represent
their knowledge. I look forward to introducing my students to different basic productivity
tools and seeing all of the creative minds come to play while creating their short story eBook.
