Lesson Idea
Lesson Idea Name: Heroes in Our Community
Grade Level/Content Area: Kindergarten
X Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
the teacher's direction and expectations.
☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
for presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.
Lesson idea implementation: First, I will introduce the topics to students by asking
questions such as ‘What is a Hero’ and ‘What is a community’? I will then explain to my
students what those words mean and give them the opportunity to think about what a
community hero is. I will tell them that a community hero is someone who keeps the
community safe. Next, I will give my students independent learning time and give them
an assignment. I will tell them to choose a community hero that they like, draw a picture
of that hero, and write a short paragraph about what it means to them to have
community heroes, like the one they chose, in their own community. I will utilize the
technology to introduce the topic and give students ideas to help them with their
assignment.
Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets
students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? To get students engaged, I
will use this technology in the classroom to help guide my students in their individual
assignments and eventually create their own digital storybook. I will make sure that my
students have a good understanding of the concept with a written plan so they can see
how to display their project with a script and a visual guide. As a part of the planning
process, I will help my students by giving them a checklist to make sure they include
important information. This is a time-saver for students and it will help motivate students
to get an efficient plan together before they start using the technology. Students can also
work together to brainstorm ideas before they begin using the technology which will get
students excited about using it and collaborating.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The Microsoft PowerPoint tool supports all students
and enhances their learning experience in the classroom. This tool supports engagement
because it allows my students to be creative with their learning and they can share this
and collaborate with others. I will also be able to see my students' individuality through
this lesson and with this tool because they have the power to make it their own.
