What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

My learning goal for this lesson is to make a fun and creative digital story that highlights the
positive character traits that a good citizen has. I will use the correct tools to help my digital
story come to life.
Selected Basic Productivity Tool: Microsoft PowerPoint

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply. (Sometimes only one option will
apply.)

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will be utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint to create a digital story. This is not a project
that will be done in one day. The first step will be for the teacher to collaborate with their
students on how to plan out a story. A story will need a beginning, middle, and end. The
teacher and students will create a plan on how the story is going to flow. Each page will be
planned out prior to the introduction of the Basic Productivity Tool. The PowerPoint will be
introduced by the teacher going through a few of the tools within PowerPoint and the ways
students can utilize the features of PowerPoint to create their own unique spin on the given
topic of creating a story about a good citizen. Once the teacher has spent time familiarizing
their students with the PowerPoint tool, they will set their first goal, creating the first page of
their story. The teacher will be assisting the collaborative pairs throughout, ensuring
everyone is meeting their goal before moving on to the next goal, the second page. This
formula of the students working on a page while the teacher walks around to assist will
repeat until the students have completed the last page of their digital story. It is important
that the teacher is providing feedback as the project goes on to make sure the students are
hitting every target of the project. It is the teacher’s job to step in to assist when needed. The
lesson will be concluded by students sharing their creative digital story that models a good
citizen with their classmates in a gallery walk fashion.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:

Lesson Idea

This activity will be done in collaborative pairs, they will be co using technology to create a
digital story. By doing this activity in collaborate pairs, it will lessen the burden of the
students as well as help them collaborate to help troubleshoot any bumps in the road that
might come along will working on this project. This technology tool will allow students to
build on their imagination and take creative liberties in their learning. We will be using a
singular goal every day when working on this project, so the students know exactly what is
expected of them. If a collaborative pair were to finish their goal early, they will have two
options: to either move on to the next goal or get more creative with their story, whether
that be adding different pictures, more animations, etc. There will always be something for
the students to work on. The idea is to have multiple “mini” goals that can be achieved every
day until the students have met their final learning goal of creating a digital story that shows
the characteristics of a good citizen.

A storyboard will be done prior to the implementation of the basic productivity tool. The
students will have collaboratively made their stories and mapped out each slide/page prior to
using Microsoft PowerPoint. This way, once the Basic Productivity Tool has been introduced,
students can focus more on familiarizing themselves with the tool and the creativity it will
allow them to implement and less on the actual story as they will already have everything
planned out.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This activity provides options for action and expression. Within the action and expression,
students will be providing options of expression and communication as this tool allows
students to use different tools for creating a digital story as well as various types of media.
The digital story will have three different elements: audio, captions, and illustrations. The
digital story will be a project where all students can create and obtain information that is best
suited for them.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

This lesson provides a unique experience for students as it puts them in the driver’s seat of
storytelling. To craft a good story, the student’s will have to exercise their knowledge of the
characteristics of a good citizen, apply them to a person, animal, character, etc. and display
their knowledge in a creative way. This lesson allows students to create something
completely new. I look forward to showing students how basic storytelling aspects can be
