Lesson Idea Name: Math Stories

Grade Level/Content Area: Kindergarten
Content Standard Addressed: K.NR.4.1 Identify written numerals 0- 20 and represent a number of
objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).

objectives of their creation or communication.”

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? Students should be able to make a
story showing that they understand what the numbers 0-20 look like as well as what they
mean (represent).

Selected Basic Productivity Tool: Desktop Microsoft Powerpoint

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson Idea

Lesson idea implementation: Students will be shown teacher’s example of a story using
desktop Microsoft PowerPoint showing knowledge and recognition of numerals from 0-20.
Students will be asked to create a story showing what they know about the numerals 0-20.
First, they will be put into groups of four and create a story board/outline of their story. Then
they will draw pictures the final pictures in their groups of the story they come up with
together. The teacher will go around guiding students to help them with their stories and
make sure they are meeting the standard. After students are done making the pictures to
their story the teacher will take photographs of the pictures the students drew and put them
into their own PowerPoints based on groups. Then each group will be voice recorded sharing
their stories which will be put onto their PowerPoints. The PowerPoints will be shared not
only with the class but on the class, newsletter sent out to parents.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology: Students will work together in groups to create a
storyboard and brainstorm prior to creating their final pictures for their story. Students will
be actively engaged during their storyboard making because they will be focused on meeting
their goal of showing their knowledge of numerals 0-20. Students will be collaborating their
ideas to meet this goal.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The activity and tool supports UDL framework in
multiple ways. For example, the students are engaged both in the activity and in the tool.
When students get to create their own story and draw the students get to use their own
ideas to create it so therefore, they will all be engaged. Additionally, the students are
representing the goals needed to be met in a different way by creating drawings and using
PowerPoint.

Reflecting on enhanced learning: The activities created will impact student learning in a
positive way by allowing students to use their knowledge and creativity to learn this math
concept in a new and fun way. The part of the lesson that I look forward to implementing
with students is the part of bringing their stories to life by putting their creations on the
PowerPoint and letting them experience seeing that and using their voices to tell their
stories. I look forward to this part of the lesson because I am excited to see the students’
finished products and how much they learned. I also look forward to this part of the lesson
because it will show me if this is an activity that we can use in class again for a different goal
or if we should do something similar or even very different.
