Lesson Idea Name: Create Your Own Expressions

Grade Level/Content Area: 5th Grade Math
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE5.OA.2 Write simple expressions that record calculations with
numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
I would like students to learn how to create their own expressions for others to solve using
PowerPoint to teach the class how to solve their problems.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will plan the activity of “Create Your Own Expression” using PowerPoint. I will introduce this
topic a few days prior to familiarize students with how to write and solve equations. I will
make the students aware of the goal, of teaching and solving their expressions, by posting
the goals on our learning goal target for the week. Students will utilize Microsoft PowerPoint
to create and design their own PowerPoint to teach the class with. The teacher will
continuously walk around and help when needed but will allow the students to lead their
own learning. Feedback will be presented to the students after they finish presenting to the

class. The teacher will write on the rubric what the child could have done differently, offer
more help, or what they loved from the presentation with an accurate grade. I will conclude
the lesson after each student presents their expressions. Once I see where all the students
either mastered, or need more help, we will regroup and discuss further.
Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?
I will use time-on-task with time limits for this project. While having students know the
deadlines ahead of time, I will help guide students to make sure that they are on track.
Additionally, I will keep the focus on the learning goal posted on our classroom learning
target. By reminding them what they are trying to achieve, this will help students want to
stay on task until they feel accomplished.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I feel like this lesson is going to work well with my students. By implementing Microsoft
PowerPoint, I am allowing students to create their own work. Students can use an abundance
of different tools available through PowerPoint, like recording a voice over, adding
animations, creating pictures and data, and adding text. This will enhance the learning
experience for students in the classroom by having students feel a personal connection to
their work. This tool and project will help support Action & Expression components of the
UDL framework. This is because all students learn different, so by having students create
their own work and teach how they learned the information to other students, you are
helping students see other ways of learning.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I feel like this lesson idea will impact student learning by having students not only feel
successful about their work being on display, but also by having students constantly solving
different expressions and remembering what steps go first. I look forward to the presentation
part of this lesson because by having students talk about their expressions and talk about
their PowerPoint, students are becoming active learners.
