Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: Fractions

Grade Level/Content Area: 3rd; Mathematics
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE3.NF.1: Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed
by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts (unit fraction); understand a fraction
a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and

process itself to improve learning outcomes.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students will be able to understand fractions ½, 1/3, and ¼ compared to a whole

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

First, we will go over our learning goal. I will introduce the fractions topic and students will
explore fractions with the same denominator comparing it to a whole. We will then watch a
BrainPOP video on fractions. After this, students will work in their groups to write a list of
fractions with the same denominator, and we will compare the fractions together as a class
on the board. The students will be given the opportunity to come up and write the fractions
on the board. The students will be able to understand how fractions are similar and different.

We will conclude with a kahoot game.

Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?
To conclude the class, we will play a kahoot game. This will allow students to use technology
to work with fractions.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The BrainPOP video is something fun and engaging for the students while they are also
learning. Each student will be able to come up with their own fractions with common
denominators. I think the students would enjoy working with their group to come up with
different fractions.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

The fraction activity will allow the students to learn more about fractions and how to
compare them. The part that I look forward to is the students playing the kahoot because I
will be able to engage with them and it’s a way students can learn while having fun with
technology.
