Lesson Idea Name: Types of Matter

Grade Level/Content Area: Second grade - Science

Content Standard Addressed:

S2P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the properties of matter and
changes that occur in objects.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know
Empowered Learner – 1.1.a. Students articulate and be able to do by the end of this
lesson:
and set personal learning goals, develop Obtain, evaluate, and communicate

strategies leveraging technology to achieve information about the properties of matter and

them and reflect on the learning process itself to changes that occur in objects

improve learning outcomes.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?

I can obtain, evaluate and communicate information about the properties of matter and
changes that occur in objects.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check
all that apply: (Sometimes only one option will apply.)

⛝ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students

are guided by teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are
assigned to the student and mostly practice based.
☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may
select the topic of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the
learning goal. The teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own
learning processes.
⛝ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and
completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can
be shared outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to
the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing via an outside
source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

The students will start off with a hook, which would be to solve a riddle. The students will watch a
BrainPop Jr video on changes of matter. After watching the video the students will be able to
describe and distinguish each state of matter and how it can change from one form to another.
After this the students will complete a matching game on quizlet followed by quizzez.

Managing student learning:

The tools being used will cause a shift in the lesson where the students would move from
passive vs active learning. During passive learning the students will be watching the BrainPop
Jr to acquire knowledge on the topic being taught. During active learning the students will do
different activities such as matching and a quizzez game to demonstrate the knowledge on the
topic they learned about. For time the class will start as a whole, after watching the BrainPop
the students will have individual time max amount of time 5 minutes to complete the menti,
after the class has completed the menti everyone will move onto the quizlet and would have
roughly 10 minutes to complete it. To complete the quizzez the students will have no more than
15 minutes.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
Engagement; These activities and technology tools support and enhance the learning experience
for the students in the classroom by giving them information on the topic and being able to
describe the different stages of matter. They will demonstrate the understanding of the concept by
taking a small quiz after the video followed along with various activities. The BrainPop Jr and
activities chosen are fun and entertaining for students their age,

Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson, we believe these tools will help students build an understanding
in a way they could not do with traditional tools by expanding their way of learning materials
versus traditional worksheets and teacher instruction. We look forward to seeing children
develop new ways on how to retain information.
