Lesson Idea Name: Weather Patterns

Grade Level/Content Area: 1st grade - Science
Content Standard Addressed:
ESS2.D Weather and Climate:
- Weather is a combination of sunlight, wind, snow or rain and temperature in a particular
region at a particular time.

- People measure those conditions to describe and record the weather and to notice patterns over
time.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Empowered Learner: 1.1.a. - Students articulate able to do by the end of this lesson:
and set personal learning goals, develop strategies Students should understand weather patterns and
leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect conditions while being able to measure and
on the learning process itself to improve learning describe their findings through the technology
tool provided.
outcomes.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students should be able to identify weather patterns and conditions. They should then be able to
further their knowledge by measuring and describing their findings through a video or podcast.
Selected Instructional Software Tool: Spotify for Podcasters

Description of Software: This is an online audio podcasting app that allows users to upload audio and
music to create learning or informational content for other students.

Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to

demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
The lesson will start by students listening to the podcast that I have created. In class, we will use the
technical artifact that has been created based on the lesson plan. I will then allow my students the
choice to create their own individual videos or podcasts. Students will be expected to talk about
weather patterns and conditions and discuss their findings on the weather that day. When this
activity is complete, students will then share their artifacts with the whole class.
Managing student learning:
Students will shift from passive to active learners throughout this lesson. My personal podcast
example provides students with the ability to create an idea on how to display their own findings. In
class, students will become active learners while they apply, evaluate, and create their activity based
on their weather findings. Students should be able to explain the tool that they choose and produce
a video or podcast from it. I would allow my students to Ask 3 then me. If they need help or
assistance, they can ask 3 of their peers and if they still do not know, they can then ask me. This will
also increase student engagement amongst my students and their peers within the lesson by using
the Ask 3 method during this technological activity.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
The technology tool that I choose and the lesson that I created will have a positive impact on all of
my students while also supporting each student’s individual needs. This lesson implements
engagement, action, and expression. It is easy to use and access by allowing voice recording and
subtitles. By providing subtitles in English, Spanish, and other languages it helps incorporate diverse
students and multi-language learners. Action and expression are presented when allowing students,
the ability to be creative and produce their own work and podcasts.
Reflection:
After designing this lesson, I believe that the activities that I have created will impact student
learning in many beneficial and positive ways. It increases and encourages engagement, creativity,
and incorporates technology within the classroom. Students are provided with freedom when
getting the choice to choose their own personal technology tool while getting to be creative.
