Lesson Idea Name: Issues Changing the Climate

Grade Level/Content Area: Nineth Grade Biology
Content Standard Addressed:
SB5.c: Construct an argument to predict the impact of environmental change on the stability of an ecosystem.
SB5.d: Design a solution to reduce the impact of a human activity on the environment. (Clarification statement: Human
activities may include chemical use, natural resources consumption, introduction of non-native species, greenhouse gas
production.)

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be

on the learning process itself to improve learning
outcomes.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Student should be able to identify human related issue that has affected ecosystems, while also
posing possible solutions.
Selected Instructional Software Tool: Spotify for Podcasters

Description of Software: A website-based tool that allows anyone to start their own podcast.

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): Podcast can be transcribed and translated into
different languages with the use of other tech tools.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.

newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
Students will be introduced to human impact by watching the documentary Seaspiracy. After
watching the documents, a brief discussion about what they found interesting and what are some
opinions about human impact on ecosystems. Student then will be given a templet that outlines how
to create a podcast account and instructions to research a range of topics. Once students have
researched their topic and produced a transcript of talking points, they will record their podcast in
the film sound rooms. Students are expected to discussion a specific issue human impact has caused
climate change and concluded with possible solutions. Each student has to speak and the podcast
had to be a minimum of 10 minutes.
Managing student learning:
This project with take serval class periods and allows for students to self-pace and research without
explicit instruction. For students that do not have a starting point or need assistant a one-to-one
group meeting with the teacher will be conducted at the beginning of research class period.
Students are also expected to submit work during the development process to ensure they are
progressing to submit a high-quality product. Along with walking around the round and asking
students questions the teacher can support some groups by guiding them to some climate issues if
none is thought of.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:

This activity provides students with the Universal Design for learning by allowing for multiple means
of action & expression. Students can craft their podcast to be interview style or free discussion
between students. Everyone is encouraged to be creative and develop a product that is meaningful
to them.
Reflection:
I feel that students will be able to showcase their creative style during an important unit that is
surrounded by county and state test. This allows for students to present information and show
mastery other than standardize testing. I am excited to show them how to record a podcast and
even work with the film teachers to use some tech they have such a mics and sound rooms. Creative
assignment are more than fun activities they are a chance to see students shine through the process
of creation; following through on work that is meaningful to them.
