What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I will be able to show that I can identify part of a plant by creating an E-book on PowerPoint.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

For this lesson I plan to show my students the eBook that I created for them. This eBook will
be set as an example for what I expect of them when they create their own. After showing
them the eBook, I will introduce them to the software, PowerPoint. I will walk them through
a tutorial on how to create an eBook on PowerPoint. This tutorial will provide all the tools
they will need to be able to successfully do this task. The students will be utilizing the
technology given by creating their own eBook and having their own ideas and thoughts go
into it. I will explain to them how the eBook is based on identifying the parts of a plant. Their
goal by the end of this task is to successfully I create an eBook on parts of a plant, by using
their own creativity and knowledge. I will make them aware of their goals by posting the
student learning goal and reminding them what it is while they are working on this task.
While the students are working, I will be walking around and being as useful as I can. This
may be a task that doesn't come easy at first, but hopefully that will be able to be overcome
by me helping and encouraging the students. I will give feedback by looking through every
student's eBook to see how far they have come to completing it right. If many of the students
are not completing this right, then I will do some reinforcements and reteach what they shall
be doing. I will conclude the lesson by allowing the students to be able to share their eBook
to the class if they would like. I plan to have a classroom page, and on this classroom page I
would ask permission from the students and the parents to be able to publish their eBooks
onto it. This way the parents can see what the students are doing during class and the
students can go home and explain to their parents exactly what they did.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that

gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:

There are a variety of strategies that I can use to help manage the use of the technology in
the classroom. I plan on collaborating with the students on what my expectations are for this
task. I plan on helping them with walking through everything that they should be doing. A
way that I can help manage the technology and engagement is by walking them through step-
by-step process, and they do it at the same rate as me. This would mean that they could not
move forward until I am done with my section of it. That way I can implement a time limit. I
plan on setting a time limit either way of around 10 to 15 minutes per slide. This could change
depending on if they are executing all the time or not executing enough of it. I would
implement the ask 3, then me rule so that there will be a limit of questions and that there can
be some communication within the classroom. I would still be walking around during this
helping with whatever problems they may occur, but I would be telling them to ask 3 and
then me. I plan to set goals and have those goals up on the board so that their focus is right.
Lastly, I will be making a written plan or storyboard prior to getting on technology tools. It is
critical for students to have a written plan before they create their eBook. I will print out a
sheet that allows the students to express their ideas and thoughts that they want to put on to
the PowerPoint, along with their script. I will give them boxes to be able to draw pictures and
write what they're going to say. This way the students will be motivated and prepared before
they start doing the task.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The technology tool that I selected for the students to use is PowerPoint. I selected this tool
because it’s an easy software to maneuver through. Along with this PowerPoint allows you to
voice record your eBook and turn that into closed captions for students who have auditory
problems. This technology tool is supporting and enhancing the learning experience for the
students in the classroom because it is allowing them to be creative and express themselves.
The tool is supporting the means of engagement because it is allowing students to express
their creativity in their own way and has many different tools that can be used within this
technology. With this tool the students will always be able to know the goal of the lesson and
engage their thoughts and ideas for the goal of the lesson. Lastly, this UDL approach is
offering a diverse way for learners to be involved with their course content.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I believe this activity will impact students learning by allowing them to think out-of-the-box to
develop a product of something they have learned. It is an activity that seems to be engaging,
and when the students are engaged, they are more likely to obtain the information more. I

look forward to implementing the part where students get to create their own eBook with
their own ideas. I look more forward to seeing their results.
