Lesson Idea Name: Adaptations E- Book

Grade Level/Content Area: 3rd grade; Science
Content Standard Addressed: S3L1.b - Construct an explanation of how external features and
adaptations (camouflage, hibernation, migration, mimicry) of animals allow them to survive in their
habitat.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and
Creative Communicator- 1.6.a. Students choose be able to do by the end of this lesson:
the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting I want students to be able to use PowerPoint
the desired objectives of their creation or to create an e-book showcasing their
communication. knowledge of one of the four adaptations
listed in the standard above.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I expect students to use PowerPoint to create an E-book that addresses 1 of the four
adaptations they have previously learned and why it aids in that animal’s survival.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: N/A; we are using PowerPoint which is a basic
productivity tool.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

Lesson Idea

I will have students using PowerPoint to create an E- book about one of the four adaptations
we previously learned explain how it helps animals survive in their habitat. This will take
place over multiple days (really depends on how the schedule works out) I will tell them
about the goal at the beginning of the lesson. Student will utilize laptops/ computers to
create their e-books. I will show students how to use PowerPoint to create their e-books.
After that, I will be there to support students if needed. Students will have a voice and choice
in their creation with only a few guidelines to follow. They will choose an adaptation and
draft an idea of what they want to include in their e- book. Once they complete their slides,
they will record a voice over reading their book. I will show them how to do this. When the
students are finished, there will be an opportunity for all students to share their e-book with
the class. I will show them how to convert their PowerPoint into a MP4 to create a video. We
will watch the videos and I will have the students decide whether they believe the creator of
the e-book meet the guidelines. This will be on a form that I will only see. I would create a
class YouTube channel that is unlisted so parents could also enjoy the stories. I would send a
link to parents. This will be the conclusion of the lesson.

Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?
Using PowerPoint is a great way to get students actively involved. There are so many features
to use for their e- book. While completing this project it is important that students stay on
task and focus on the learning goal. I plan to have designated days for completing the project.
On day one, well go over the goal and requirements. I will also give them some time to think
about what they want to do. The next day, they will create a story board drafting out their
ideas. They next day would be getting on PowerPoint and working on slide etc. This will
continue until the presentation.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Using PowerPoint to create an e- book supports all students because it allows for subtitles.
Students who speak a different language are still able to read books that they may have
struggled with if subtitles were not available. They would be able to write their book in their
first language and add English subtitles also. Using PowerPoint supports and enhances
students learning experience because it allows to be creative and have a say in their product.
This activity supports action and expression because students have the choice on how to
deliver their knowledge. All I ask is that their e- book addresses the required content. They
have full creative design besides that. The even have four adaptations to pick from which also
gives them choice.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I feel like the activity will have a great impact on students learning. It allows them to
display their knowledge and creativity. I look forward to the presentation aspect of the
lesson. Watching all their hard work pay off will be very fulfilling.
